https://ballotpedia.org/California_Proposition_25,_Replace_Cash_Bail_with_Risk_Assessments_Referendum_(2020)

This is interesting. I like the idea, of course, but I'm worried about the implementation. Who will be doing the risk assessments? How do we know that the risk assessments will be equitable? How will we address biases and outright racism/sexism in those risk assessments?

Also I 100% expect it to fail because the media has done an excellent job by terrifying people in the state with their "prisons are releasing murderers/child rapists early because of covid worries!" -_-

Even though you are worried about the implementation, I think overall ending cash bail is a good thing.

I voted in favor of it. The one I wasnt sure about was the dialysis and Uber one.

Ive spoken to some Uber drivers about it and they hate the rules, but it seems super messy to make a specific rule only allowing gig workers through a certain segment rather than fix for all...

The dialysis one I wasnt sure because California medical association was against it and I still dont know what it is but I saw Davita is spending like almost 100M against it...so that has me wondering why they so afraid

The risk assessments will be the same theyve always been, except now they wont punish people for being poor by only letting people with money bail out of jail

how much money you pay should have no bearing on whether youre released while awaiting trial

I think prop 23 has good intention, but the unfortunate reality is that it'll increase the cost for patients without any improvements to safety. The nurses and technicians at these clinics will probably be sufficiently knowledgeable to spot complications than just putting any doctor on-site. That's also an issue with the proposition because it doesn't specify specific doctors related to dialysis. It's a proposition from the United Healthcare Workers Union which is good, but yeah unfortunately companies like Davita would just push the cost of it down to the patients.

We already have $0 bail because of the coronavirus and all it has done is increase crime.

Or perhaps, historically what leads to an increase in crime is an increase in financial struggles, and the federal government has refused to step in and help people who cant pay their bills anymore

In my nextdoor app people keep bitching about the props.

They think the Bail one is just letting people walk out of jail. They were also freaking out about the sex offender bills too. its crazy how misinformed people are.

but im definitely in favor of the bail one.

if someone goes to jail for an old speeding ticket they should be able to post bail instead of staying in jail for 2 weeks
If someone intentionally murders somebody they shouldnt be able to post bail

We cant have both?

Well the sex offender one allows for people with a 10 year age gap to not become a 290 registrant.

I think the bail system is stupid. We shouldn't be detaining people who are not a risk physically or economically to other people. That should have never been an option, and for the people who aren't doing either of those types of crimes they shouldn't even be in jail to begin with.

If you're a danger to other people you have no right to be free, bail needs to be more like "upgrade to a sort of half way prison while you wait for trial" kind of thing, not released back into the public.

I agree, I voted yes.

theres also another prop on rent control which to me is silly. Of course property owners/landlords are gonna vote no, and renters are gonna vote yes. I kinda wish the government would just intervene and do stuff without polling the public >_> does that make me a fascist

I dont think thats true at all

republicans consistently convince people to vote agains their best interest. I could easily see even renters arguing that rent control is socialism or some bullshit

Oregon got rid of bails years ago. The state just replaces it a similar system, so "getting rid of bails" is kind of a moot
