Few hours in and I feel I've been given no incentive to explore or experiment with the levels. Everything is very laid out

Galaxy was definitely designed to be much more linear than SM64 and Sunshine. It literally is not possible to find Stars that are not part of the mission that you are on, unlike in the previously two games.

No shit? That's kind of the point. Although, while we're here, it bears repeating that linear =/= bad and nonlinear =/= good.

Yeah it's supposed to be more linear. There are a couple of galaxies that give you a feel of openness, but obviously there's nothing comparable to anything in Sunshine.

I mean the previous two games were a lot more open than this

And yea I agree that linear=/=bad, its just a tad unenjoyable in this particular instance I find. Makes the game a bit too handholdy for me.

Maybe you'll enjoy Sea Slide Galaxy at least. Probably the most open galaxy in the game, and that aspect makes it one of my favorites. I like the linearity of Galaxy, but having at least one area that felt like Sunshine was really nice.

Late in the game you unlock the purple comets which entail some more exploratory stars, but yeah the idea was to replicate 2D platforming levels in 3D spaces. You should think of it as building on SMB3/World as much as, if not more so than 64/Sunshine

I think SM3DL and SM3DW did a far better job of it. Seems like a lot of stuff was done in SMG for the sake of convention with prior 3D Mario games and not because it was good design.

The thing that really annoys me the most is that none of the levels are particularly large. I think the largest "open" map is Deep Dark Galaxy and it's not really any bigger than Dire Dire Docks.

I would have loved just one really large version of "The Gate"

Yeah it was a little lame, I wouldn't mind the linearity if they mixed in a few big planets instead of all these micro asteroids you're bouncing too and from

Yeah, I think my biggest problem even back then was that calling the areas "galaxies" made them seem bigger than they actually were. They more often than not were more like small solar systems, and a few of them just a single planet.

It's linear and easy as shit, thus boring. The wonderful presentation and the spherical factor carries it for a playthrough I guess, but once that wears off it's a pretty weak 3D Mario game.
