i have questions:

I know its meant to be a mix of home and handheld console, but would I expect any issues just using it as a hand held?

Specifically all Id likely play is Pokemon and may be a Mario game or two if I felt inclined.

Nope, I play exclusively on handheld. In fact, my wife plays AC on mine so much I ended up buying a lite for myself and its perfect

Not really. The biggest issue you'll run into is joycon drift down the line.

Theres a select few games that make you play with detached joycon controllers. A few only support higher number of players (than 2) on split screen when docked, I think MK8 did this but its been a while. CTR definitely did

Mostly from games that expect you to use it like a Wii lol.

Didnt want to worry about having the experience be crippled because Im not going to have a TV to hook it up to most of the time.

Those games usually work better using the touch screen anyway.

Oh yeah and if you play handheld you definitely have to watch out for joycon drift. Itll happen eventually. I use a pro controller docked and it still somehow happened to my joycons even though I only use them 5% of the time
