Gameplay wise it could be one of the greatest FF's, but story and characters is a big pillars of what makes a FF good. It feels like a lot of wasted potential, cause we had world and background...we just needed...more story and character interaction between themselves.

I feel like it had some interesting gameplay aspects, like status effects actually working on bosses and being able to play it like a (semi)open world game.

The story was boring and not executed well though, from what I remember.

I tried it again about six months ago and I just couldnt get into it. I legitimately made it close to the end, but it was just so boring and one dimensional. The combat was the worst thing about it, which is also the most important.

The graphics werent even that much better than FFX.

Playing zodiac age now and it's fun.

I'm about 20 hours into it and it really hasn't grabbed me yet. None of the characters are really that cool and the class system feels a bit dull compared to FF5 or FFT.

Leveling up and earning skill points doesn't feel rewarding because getting new licenses for stuff I can't access yet is lame. Hell, having to spend skill points to buy licenses to be able to equip specific, individual pieces of equipment is lame compared to every other FF game.

Thus far, there hasn't been a real hook. Like, FF5 and FFT had neat classes that you could mix and match and made a meaningful difference. FF7 had materia that you could grow and combine in creative ways. FF6 had characters with unique special abilities.

FF12 has...what, Gambits? Eh...

Zodiac age helps polish the shit out of the terd.

Game has some of the best characters in the series. And the absolute worst and most pointless.

The story and dialog is completely nonsensical rubbish delivered in a hilariously trying way too hard 'proper' fashion, which actually makes it really enjoyable to me. As long as van or whatever her worthless name is that I cant remember dont open their stupid mouths.

Combat is pretty cool, in an 'rpg manager' kind of way.

Gambits need to be ripped off wholesale already. Nowhere near enough games have ripped off gambits. Why? Pride? Fuck your pride Mr. Srawman, I want AI that I can make non idiotic or adjust to particular situations if the need arises.

Level design, as always is where post talent drain ie squaresoft to squeenix fails the hardest.

The game is technically 3d, but it's designed like a 2d game, and functionally, absolutely nothing would be lost in switching to 2d graphics. All levels and areas, from towns to dungeons are composed of simplistic shapes linked together to form a neat design on the map screen, but result in repetitive room after repetitive room in practice.

It's like the entire game is a 3d version of the level design from the new areas in chrono trigger ds. Which basically describes almost every modern squeenix game since the talent drain as well.

In fact chrono trigger ds is a great showcase for the change in design quality from square soft to squeenix, as it's literally side by side in the same game, using the same assets.

I was so stoked about having another political intrigue storyline from the same people who did FFT and set in the same world. But good lord, it was so uninteresting and uneventful.

The story was a typical, bland, and cliche one of dethroned royalty trying to retake the throne of a kingdom you know nothing about, whom most of the cast have little to no relation or feelings toward and even less reason to.....save?

A story overcomplicated by meaningless jargon and lore most players wont care about to learn.

The license board mechanic that was stupid and made zero sense even by gameplay standards. And although the gambit system was very well done outside of maybe a handful of fights you dont have to edit it much outside of maybe a handful of fights.

Lastly the world while aesthetically beautiful felt bland, boring, and devoid of character, and activities outside of hunts.

The other 4 are the main characters that the story revolves around with Vaan and Panelo just being along for the ride. Regardless, the world, lore, and side content is among the best, not just in Final Fantasy, but in all JRPGs.

People rag on Final Fantasy all the time for having super convoluted, nonsense plots and main characters that fall into the classic trope of being "the chosen one"

FF12 is a breath of fresh air in the series.

FF8 is given this irreverence that's not really spoken about even though everyone kind of agrees the story falls apart pretty quickly. I think 12 should take that place in peoples minds, it's way better than 8 for my money.

8s story doesnt really fall apart until disk 3 and thats over half way through the game so its not exactly quick that the story takes a nosedive
well it actually falls apart at the end of disk 2 with the worlds dumbest plot twist. but thats followed by the garden battle which is the most exciting part of the game so how bad that twist was doesnt sink in until disk 3

Vaan was less of a main protagonist than Terra was in FF6. I never found him to be as annoying as people said, but mainly because he didn't have much development or relevance to the plot to even notice.
