With the people I knew, back years ago, it was considered a bad sign if someone listened to them.

Same for Blink 182. I think Blink 182 were thought of as for losers. I don't remember.

Theyre insanely emo imo, maybe some of the first. I loved them when they first were out but now theyre really cringe. Especially the emo rock chester followed with his not-good white "rapper".

I remember that song, love it (despite me really liking some of their albums)! The guy who made that video actually likes LP as well, but yeah that song is still pretty funny.

Ive loved LP since I was in high school, and yes it has been the in thing to hate on them and make fun of them, especially on the internet.

but as others have said, enjoy what you enjoy. People will try to bring you down and make fun of you for something that you like

Either that or the band needs to pass the awkward period where they transition from uncool to 'classic'. Pretty much every big band has that weird phase that they gotta get through until they come out the other side looking nice. Metallica nearly imploded and now on the other side of it (the Some Kind of Monster documentary, the St. Anger album, etc.), they're legends. The early 90's alt rock also turned 'classic' in the last decade or so.

A lot of bands break up or go on hiatus when that period starts creeping in (ie. Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden). But some stay together and tough it out.

Hating LP and other bands is something teenagers-early 20s people do for the most part. Most people grow out of that crap. Same for anything else like movies, games, etc.

The thing about LP was that they were cool when they broke and I was young at the time. That was one of the first moments where I can call a band 'mine'. But in the years following, I grew out of them quickly because I was searching out other music and most of it just kicked more ass than LP. They're surface level and very easy to enjoy. Their first 2 albums kick ass but they're not deep experiences. They're big because they had broad appeal and it was easy to get into.

I returned back to them years later and can appreciate it. But other bands did similar music better.

I was already in my 20s when they came out & they were very much a lame, dumb band for teens.

On the surface they were dumb but goddamn In the End and Numb made your momma tap her toes. And that's another reason they were so big.

Which makes me think: halfway during the 20th century, jazz was considered by adult generations to be rebellious noise and something only younger generations listen to. Nowadays it's generally considered to be sophisticated, some would even say snobby.
Makes me wonder what genres like rap will be considered as in like 50 years.

I remember thinking I was the coolest kid in the 5th grade when I would jam to them.. So that ends up making me feel a little lame when I listen to them.

In the End is still my jam though.

That being said I listen to A LOT of considerably lamer music. I was boppin Sheena Easton's 9 to 5 on the way home today for instance.

They were rehabilitated in the "cool" image a while ago, actually. I attribute it to Chester Bennington's singing, which is the focal point of talking about them now (and yes, that was going on well before he died).
