There are several weird made up rules people have stated. While the 'must originate from a video game one' is probably valid it's only valid until it isn't. Sakurai also used to say Ridley wouldn't be a Smash fighter and yet here we are.

Pretty certain Sakurai explicitly said in either a direct or a written interview that licensing for manga characters would be a shit show for some reason. Not like that can't change but that is the one prereq that he's actually confirmed.

Also pretty sure he name dropped Ichigo, Naruto, and Goku in that same thing because those were major fan requests.

True enough. The funny thing about him saying that is it sounds like they at least looked into it. So maybe the 'originated in a video game' rule isn't that serious but they just haven't found the right character they can use yet.

Sonic getting TV show and movie doesn't stop making him a video game character. Just like how Goku could literally have a billion games and he'd still be a Japanese comic book character.

Its the fact that youve let him define video game characters in such an arbitrary illogical way for you. Make up your own mind.

For me Goku is 100% a video game character. When youre in a thousand of them I think youve earned that right. Just like, again, sonic being in comics, movies and cartoons, doesnt stop him from being one either.
