They can still do it, PS+ always been a Discounts optional service, like it was on PS3.

No chance. Once you've established that people will happily pay for something if you make them think it's necessary; it would be madness to stop charging them.

Haven't Xbox already done this, or are at least planning to? I heard a while back that you would no longer need Xbox Live to play online.
