I should ask a friend I know in HR, but like... Can they actually see those questionare questions?

Personality Fit:. I think this is the largest unspoken issue with recruiting diverse talent. Since many of the hiring managers come from similar backgrounds (see point 1 above), they consciously or unconsciously prefer to hire candidates who they can relate too. This comes up when it comes down to the "airplane interview" portion. Where you ask candidates what they like to do for fun, background, etc. When recruiting candidates with similar background as the hiring manager, they may say "I like to ski in aspen, lacrosse, golf, etc.". Where as diverse candidates may say something unrelatable to the hiring managers such as basketball, music, etc. This is very tough as we all have biases that come into play.
I have been in many interview discussions where they will rant and rave about a candidate with a similar background as the hiring manager, and the hiring manager will say "that candidate will fit in great with the team culture and dynamics, he reminds me of myself when I was his age, or he reminds me of my son." Yes technicals play a big role in the interview process but there are many situations where the diverse candidate faired better on technicals than the white candidate, but because the MD was worried about "fit", chose the white candidate instead.

I can see this being a thing and it sucks. If outside personality is going to matter, stuff like this will always be an issue. Even outside of race, some type of personality difference will always be an issue.

Yeah, I'm sure job applications ask for your race for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

It's obviously true that there is a dearth of qualified black candidates. It's also obviously true that those qualified black candidates that do exist get unfairly passed over for racist reasons. But the idea that there is a parity in the talent pool is weird. It's not compatible with the generally accepted claims of systemic racism in our education and criminal justice systems. And those issues start a long time before you get to the post-undergrad recruitment phase

I know my hard on for your take on racial issues is kinda weird, but quoting this as the far more succinct version of what i was trying to say

It's not hard to believe minorities are rejected since the applications do ask you things like race, gender etc.

I mean, they do ask, but as far as I know it's for documentation and statistical use. Or are you saying they look at it and filter out applications based on it

People who don't believe this probably haven't filled out many job applications.

Wait, am I being naive for thinking that companies don't filter out applicants based on those racial statistics questions? I don't know, it just sounds off too me

Its used for reporting diversity to show that they arent racist. Definitely not used for filtering by race

They use your name to filter by race (hopefully subconsciously, but you never know)

Plus they can just look up your address, zip code and just infer your race from there.

I was referring to the one where they were signing their customers up for extra accounts without their knowledge. They were doing this for a LOT longer than they were wanting to admit to. The "official" timeline is May 2011 - July 2015. I had a student loan from Wells Fargo in 2003 and I saw an extra account pop up in around 2004 or 2005 when I started paying it off. I ignored it at first, but I got charged a fee for not having money in that extra account.

I called them to ask about why I was charged a fee and they started asking questions about whether I had been to a Wells Fargo location to open the account. When I said no, they closed it quickly and weren't wanting to answer many questions about how or why the account was opened.

I didn't think much of it after the fact until that issue blew up in their faces.

It was a joke because Wells Fargo has been slapped on the wrist multiple times this millennium alone.

They had an episode of Dirty Money on them.
