The Great Leap Forward was a massive failure and everyone knew it but it lasted for twice as long as it should have because he refused to give up on it for idealist reasons. Eventually other people in the government had to step in. Then Mao launched the Cultural Revolution to make himself appear as a god and to make the people hate the rest of China's government besides him.
