Hey @Tropicalwood I want you to look up the COVID-19 case totals for both FL and NY

Then you can explain how genuinely dumb you feel for posting that pic

Hate to break it to ya champ but not only is this dated and cherry picked but uh FL has one of the highest rates for COVID-19 cases per capita in the country. This became common knowledge for months but apparently you haven't picked up on it. Maybe it's because you only get your information from the right-wing equivalent of CNN

Infection rate really doesn't matter - how many cases are 'undetected?'

Deaths are a better (although more morbid) measure.

Florida has 13,000 deaths, and New York has 32,000 deaths. 21.5 million population in Florida, 18.8 million in New York.

Florida is 0.6% death rate, New York is 1.7%.

Although the case numbers are apparently higher in Florida, there was a much higher (2x) death rate in New York. Also, Florida is an 'older' state (42 years average vs 36 years in New York), meaning more of their population is at risk.

What we can assume is that due to the density of the states - 353 Florida and 421 New York - New York probably had a LOT more cases than reported - especially since it was hit before testing was readily available.

I really don't know why New York had so many more deaths given it has/had stricter controls in place.

How much of NYs deaths came in the first 2 months?

Because New Yorks deaths came at a time when we knew extremely little about the virus and how to save people

it stands to reason that months later we would better know how to prevent deaths

but It also stands to reason that months later wed know how to keep the spread from getting out of control and Florida failed at that

The big lesson we've learned is that nursing home staff need to also be quarantined.

Not sure how this topic became about Andrew Cuomo's handling of coronavirus, but you don't have to defend it to make the point that this bill is stupid as hell.

That is true - but again, the ratio of confirmed cases to deaths is MUCH lower in Florida. We know how infectious Covid is, but for some reason, there were fewer cases and more deaths in New York. The only thing I'd assume is that there were a LOT more cases in New York that did not happen, or that deaths were counted differently or something.

I am not saying that Florida is any better off - I am more amused at the difference in either reporting or the statistics.

A virus jacket is made of bits of the cell it commandeered. Florida was almost certainly much more homogeneous than New York, which made the local strain more samey and easier for the immune system to beat down. In contrast, New York City is crazy diverse, with various people coming and going to and from various places constantly.

Florida wasn't really a disaster until all those idiot college kids, from mostly everywhere, invaded over spring break.

So like say some small town that had their own police force loses population to larger cities and as a result decides it would be cheaper and better to disband their police force and use the county sheriff department instead would be penalized by this?

Is that confirmed what happened or just a theory? I do definitely believe there is a more diverse makeup in New York, though.

Just a vaguely-educated asspull of a guess.

When a new virus meets homogeneity, it'll either tear shit up or peter out quickly. A virus dumped into heterogeneity will do both at once.

Pretty sure one working theory that has been backed by some evidence is that the New York/New Jersey area had a deadlier strain of the virus that came from Europe (where death rates were also higher).

Most of the rest of the US had a less-deadly one.
