i used to play professional pokemon until about 11 years ago

background:
in pokemon, luck is extremely involved-there was speed ties, freezes, burns, critical hits

those are all a small percentage of happening and can somewhat be mitigated

over my very long pokemon career i got bad luck tons of times and got lucky tons of times

but once upon a time....

my team and i made it all the way to the championship round. in the deciding game, i all but had the series wrapped up. everyone in our IRC group chat was all but popping champagne and celebrating our championship

but do you know what happened? my gyarados got frozen by ice beam on the next turn, a 10% chance. it was no biggie, it was that much of a guarantee i would win, my team was still celebrating

do you know what happened on the next turn? i stayed frozen and gyarados got critical hit, an 80% then 6.25% chance of happening.

and then you know what happened next turn? same thing reeze and crit, 80% chance and then 6.25%. my gyarados was dead

still no big deal, i had 1 last pokemon that could take a hit and clean up....do i even need to tell you what happened? their pokemon won the speed tie vs me...and then dealt me a critical hit, a 50% chance and then a 6.25% chance

we lost the championship

it was just the worst thing, to grind for months on end (this was a 13 week tournament), have it pay off, make it to the finals, go to a deciding game 7 while putting the entire team on your back (i was the captain)...get that close to hoisting the trophy only to have it snatched away

i was in pain for a very long time after that. i re-watched that replay every week for at least a year. it was and probably is still the worst moment of my life.

do you know statistically what the chances of all those events going against me? i had calculated it at the time but it is INSANELY low

the universe is really working against you when dumb low chances occur that often

additional info:
-we also lost in the finals the year before but it wasnt close
-we also lost in the finals the year after (i was in a mangement only role at this point) and it was kinda close
-year after that (our 4th straight finals appearance!) we finally won but it felt like we were just owed at that point

4th diamond/pearl, my last match ended up being 5th gen black/white

the replay system shut down and i no longer have the logs, so to recall my team:

tyranitar/cradily/gyarados/gengar

i want to guess heatran/machamp but who knows

No the aesoft replay server shut down. I had the logs on my old laptop 3 laptops ago, I def don't have it now
