Did you not grow up with the series? Maybe you aren't aware of worse fanbases? I'm not saying Harry Potter doesn't have a significant toxic fanbase, but there are fandoms that've done so much worse than Harry Potter I think.

I've never seen the Harry Potter fandom act hostile to those outside of it. If anything, they're too nice.
