They only made sense back when it could(and did) take literal weeks for the new government to arrive in Washington. Now, almost everyone can be there within a day or two. Cornhuskers posted... Sure. And that gives Democrats a reason to drag this until Nov 4th, then invoke a Senate rule that a lake duck can't vote on a SCOTUS pick. If McConnell loses, he almost certainly doesn't have standing to continue. Actually, that's what I'm afraid of: that a bunch of these vulnerable Republican incumbents will pledge not to nominate anyone while it's electorally useful to do so, then just go back on their pledge if Biden wins and then quickly confirm some one in the lame duck session once they're insulated/relieved from the consequences. I don't think McConnell wants to wait though. In any case, this will be decided without a vote or perhaps regardless of the vote.
