The MCAT is just a glorified IQ test so we shouldn't get rid of it. You don't want your doctor to be an idiot do you?

Wouldn't say get rid of it. Just put less of an emphasis on it in admissions and put more emphasis on the applicant's experiences, personal statement and interview. A lot of medical schools are already doing this but many of the Ivy league schools still have a stick up their asses about test numbers.

MCAT has zero correlation with the knowledge and practice of a physician.

Given that I took the MCAT 7 years ago and am a Physician right now, yes I do know what the MCAT tests.

Tbf, very little of that has anything to do with being a physician.

its required to keep up with the condensed course work you end up with in medical school.

I don't even remember what was on the MCAT. None of what I studied on the MCAT was in medical school. I scored in the 20th percentile on the MCAT and scored in the 90th percentile on my medical licensing boards. There are no studies that show a correlation between MCAT scores and practicing physicians. There are only studies that show a very weak correlation between MCAT scores and medical licensing exam scores.

The MCAT literally doesn't mean a thing with the quality and knowledge of the doctor.

I can't speak for the MCAT, but nothing I studied to prepare for the SAT/Subject Tests/ACT made me more likely to succeed in college. Standardized tests are a cash grab.

Medicine doesnt need diversity, it needs people who can actually be capable medical professionals.

this is just another dumb spin of saying minorities arent smart enough so we have to make it easier for them.

its fucking insulting.

regardless of how you feel about entrance exams and all that Jazz, its no different than changing physical examinations for say the military or being a fireman.

The test already can't determine who'd be a capable medical professional. It just tests who can regurgitate information.

I understand that but its still a test to show if the applicant has basic knowledge of biology/science.

you need some sort of barometer to judge applicants.

Eliminate it, let the now more lax requirements shuffle more into severe debt. They're still going to pass the licensing exam unless they do away with that too.

There is substantial evidence that shows that medicine DOES need more diversity.

Minority patients prefer having a minority physician. Ample evidence supports that having a physician who shares the same language or culture leads to better patient outcomes. Ample evidence also supports that physicians are more likely to end up practicing where they grew up or where they did their training, which is essential for finding doctors who want to practice in underserved communities.

I already spoke about how the MCAT does not have any correlation with the knowledge and practice of a physician.

You're so uninformed that it's insulting.

As a resident physician....

LMAO

The thing is, the reason why we have exams like this in the first place is to prevent people from attending medical schools, failing out hard with student loans. It is a test to see if you can handle the material or not. Medical school isn't your normal grad school. The amount of shit you have to know is like drinking water from a fire hydrant everyday.

And if this does happen, then what about the STEP 1 and STEP 2 exams? Are we going to start claiming minority and affirmative action? These tests exist to protect patients and make sure physicians are competent.
