I am obviously not a hockey fan, but is it legal to hit the goalie with the puck, or is that a penalty? If the puck hits the goalie at any point and makes it into the goal, does the goal count?

If you mean a player running into the goalie, then that's goalie interference and will be called as a penalty. If the puck deflects off the goalie and goes into the net then it's a good goal. The play doesn't end until a ref blows their whistle to signify the puck is "dead" and the play is over. So just shooting the puck at the goalie isn't a penalty.
