Or how fucked would our world now be if it happened back then?

Modern medicine and science is struggling against Covid-19 in our current times. I doubt it would bode well for the world 70 years ago.

Probably woulda been better. Not as global back then and people probably woulda worn masks correctly (in countries that would do so)

Smallpox killed somewhere between 300-500 million.

Now smallpox both predates the 50s and was worse in every single way than COVID but the short answer is we'd get over it and it would just be another one of those legendary eras of pestilence like the black death.

Of course the black death wasn't a world wide thing. There just aren't many diseases out there awful enough to infect the whole world.

In the time of the Spanish flu, there weren't very many idiots who refused to wear masks

I'm guessing this wouldn't have changed much in the 50s

Plus the need for international cooperation may have affected the cold war
