So my life is mostly weeks of being content and at peace with the spot Im in, followed by weeks of severe depression and woe is me and Im worthless, etc.

And it just keeps going like that. Well, I think Im finally ready to see a psychiatrist or whatever. But Im worried whatever meds he/she prescribes me will turn me into a zombie and a shell of the person I used to be. I got major hang ups about the medications while I admittedly know very little about them other then probably sensationalized stories Ive read.

I guess what Im trying to get at is... do you take medications for depression or other mental conditions and how have they affected you? What are the side effects?

The thing about medications is that they work differently for every person. Plus they take weeks of time to adjust to your body/mind. There is most probably a set of medication that will work for you, but it's a process that is going to take time and commit to. If you go on medication and you don't like the way it makes you feel, talk with your psychiatrist who should be open to helping you find the right combination.

You really do have to stick with it, like was previously said, any medication can take 2-4 weeks before it is working as intended.

You cant just try it for a week and say this doesnt work.
