I had it light up, then the next time I started up the car it was gone.

But I worry there is still damage.

If the light goes off on its it means it's not urgent, you can still keep driving.. You still want to know what it was cause it could be a problem in the future. Go use a reader to see what the problem is.

Gas cap. Remove it and then put it back on.

Nope. I have not touched it in weeks.

It's been a while, but I think if the error code that caused the check engine light clears it will turn itself off. at the very least, I know that if you hook up to the diagnostics port and clear all the error codes it takes at least 20 minutes or 20 miles or something like that for the system to re recognize the problem and turn the light back on.

Its based on mileage and I believe not every test trips at the same mileage. You can clear all the codes by disconnecting the battery. I had to drive like 40 or 50 miles to get my O2 sensor to trip again after resetting it.

You can also clear the codes by just getting an OBD reader like I said, and you can also use it to monitor all the self diagnostic tests the system performs.

Also... be sure its the actual check engine light and not something like the tire pressure light. My RAV4 actually has a diagnostic light that the manual says may turn on but not to worry about it unless it stays on for an extended period of time without turning off.

I have an old school analog car. The tire pressure light is something else.

Or just drive to AutoZone and theyll tell you for free. I bought the code reader myself and it honestly wasnt super helpful since I cant fix most of the things that would trip the light anyway.

If the light went out then I wouldnt sweat it. If youre worried then just drive to Advance Auto or Auto Zone and theyll walk out into the parking lot and test your car for free.

Driving to Autozone is more practical than plugging something into your OBD port?
