I think that they're decent for what they are - fun, treasure hunting, adventure-laden action games, but they never really resonated with me.

This, except I guess I am a fan of sorts for the series considering I beat and platinumed almost all of them with the exception being Golden Abyss. Anyway, each game had a few moments where the story was fairly engaging except each one has at least one where it messes it up as well. My favorites for what they offer overall are Drake's Deception(3), Drake's Fortune(1) and Lost Legacy(4.5), least favorite is definitely Thief's End(4), tied with if not followed by Golden Abyss(0.5).

Among Thieves(2) is right in the middle of my list because while gameplay improved over the original and it added online multiplayer the story got worse among a few other things. The villains were comically cliche, Chloe was essentially just a piece of ass for white guys to pass around(Thankfully the last game she was in did her justice.), and the various time skips ruined a lot of the suspense the game could have had. This game also seemed to start the trend of lots of cinematic set pieces in the series which kept a lot of the future entries from reaching their utmost potential. I think Among Thieves(2) is a greatish game, especially for it's time, but it was seriously overrated by professional critics and fans and still is. While the campaign of Drake's Deception(3) is a little bit weaker in gameplay(Lots of set pieces.) and overall length, the multiplayer pushed the series to it's pinnacle for it's time.

yeah i don't think anyone will really disagree, they're basically just schlock

altho apparently the 4th game really goes out of its comfort zone to try and actually tell a compelling story. never played it tho

I get that Thief's End(4) was trying to further humanize Nathan Drake and a few other characters and make them more believeable and relateable but all of the bland automated platforming and ridiculous near miss set pieces completely shattered any kind of realistic immersion they were trying to establish. I wanted the game to be over before it actually did end and as someone who liked the series for a long time that isn't good. The climax was incredibly disappointing too as you could tell they purposely omitted a certain important character from it just to use them in the plot of another game.

I've seen people try to make the stories out as great or spectacular. Being schlock is fine but I find the stories rather bland which is bad for a game that's very narrative focused imo.

I thought Uncharted 4 was incredible. Even for my first game in the series, I was sucked into the story and became attached to the characters. Then after playing Uncharted 1, I realized 4 was an anomaly.

Thief's End(4) really wasn't incredible for the series gameplay wise, considering it didn't significantly innovate and build upon the classic series gameplay and instead tried to be even more of a interactive movie than a game, and thus the dev didn't balance the gameplay properly, etc. and this REALLY kills it's replay value. Drake's Fortune(1) was great for it's time and is a better designed game and that's why I hold it in much higher regard.

Romancing the Stone is one of my top 10 favorite movies, and at least parts of the Uncharted franchise are obviously influenced by it, so that alone makes me a little more connected to them.

Naughty Dog games have never had great stories, but theyre probably the best AAA company when it comes to writing characters.

I thought Rockstar was better at that though they manage to suffer even more when it comes to half assed gameplay and relying on a formula.

they borrow a lot from indiana jones which i would say they are roughly on par with in terms of plot. they're not exactly supposed to be poignant literature, they're fun globetrotting adventures

I love Indiana Jones but the great things about those wasnt the story telling as much as the action choreography and exotic settings. Uncharted has the later but action choreography isnt something that really translates smoothly into video game form, unless you use Qtes but those tend to be lame.

I kinda include characters when I say story. Sully was the only character I recall being particularly good. For the most part they're all kinda cookie cutter and generic. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by most authentic humor but I found a lot of it cringey and kinda forced.

lol What? Original Drake's Fortune(1) for PS3 was perfectly playable(Not sure how it was unlatched but with patches it's fine) and considering the gameplay for this series didn't really evolve it doesn't feel that outdated. I would know, especially since I platinumed both the original PS3 and remastered PS4 versions.

Nah

It is. The story of Among Thieves(2) is ass, the gameplay or design didn't significantly improve at all and got a bit worse with more action set pieces, and basically the people who like it overrate it because it was the entry to introduce online multiplayer to the series.
