i hope i have fun and not get overwhelmed with da massive size of dis world. Dis part alone already feels like a lot lol

what should I be taking when searching for things? like should i toss clothes dat are useless once i find better armor or keep and sell dem on some market? best weapons? should i use shield? or should i just figure everything out on my own and just have fun???

Pretty much, anything enchanted nets good prices - but yeah, just do whatever you want basically. Or look at the perk trees and see anything that seems interesting to you and find stuff for that.

I was doing dual maces since there's a pretty sweet perk for that

Usually if you bomb your game w/ mods some mods will conflict and it'll kapooey your game - find a list on here for a stable Xbox playthrough (someone had something sweet for the PS4 lists that made it look gorgeous)

Right after you leave Helgen (I think that's the tutorial area's name), you can go across the river and kill some old grandma witch and take over her enchantment altar in the basement. That's usually the first thing I do whenever I start. Companions you have with you consider entering that area trespassing though, lol.

The river I'm talking about is the same one you'll go by if you follow that other ragamuffin who escapes with you (he goes to the riverside town nearby). I forget what direction...but want to say NW or something.

As for magic, you can start using it immediately -- I think most mages have at least a few spells. You should be able to find some other spell in the tutorial when you go the torture room. The store in that riverfront town has some basic spells, too.

Best weapon and armor kind of depends on your desired playstyle.

Armor is broken into light (leather, scale, glass...) and heavy (iron, steel, Daedric...). Stealth is easier in light armor while heavy armor lets you take more punishment than light. I think there are cloth items (robes, hoods and stuff) that tend to have magic-based enchantments but I honestly never played that way so I can't remember.

With melee weapons you can dual wield, use a weapon and shield, or use a two-handed weapon. Using a shield obviously gives you more survivability while the other options do more damage. Like armor it depends on the playstyle that you enjoy. There are also magic staves that give you bonuses to spells and the like.

Whatever path you choose, the game isn't really too difficult, so you can't necessarily make a "wrong" choice, although it's a good idea to generally know how you want to level before spending points on perks in trees that you don't plan to develop, e.g. mess around with stealth in the beginning levels so you know whether you want to spend skills on it.

I will say that smithing and enchanting are the most powerful skills in the game - you can enchant some pretty insane bonuses onto your gear with some investment, and you can smith the best armor / weapons long before you'd find them in the world. If you plan to go into enchanting then save any gear with enchantments for disenchanting, as this gives you skill increases. But again, the game isn't difficult by any means, so don't worry about it if you don't like it or just can't be assed.

As far as loot goes, you will eventually become over-encumbered if you loot absolutely everything. If something's value is only a few gold, then it's probably fine to drop it. Leveling stamina will increase your equip load. As far as I know there's no reason to save things that you aren't using, unless they have enchantments that you want to disenchant, so feel free to sell your junk. I believe you get a house with unlimited storage early in the game, so if you find a special item that you don't want to sell but aren't using, you can stash it there.

Final random tip: open any books that you find. You don't have to actually read them, but some of them will give you skill increases simply by opening them.

I second what that guy said^ there's one super shield with magic ward against spells, but usually I dualed mace'd w/ the bone breaker perk - you eventually wind up being able to do everything

you can get the black star to recharge magic weapons at the Shrine of Azura + it's infinite so it never breaks after using

join a guild and follow their questline so you have a permanent enchanting/smelting (I usually picked the College of Winterhold) loot dump

You don't own it, but she and her familiar (?) won't respawn or anything. You can use it to sleep and I think there's even a skillbook laying around. You could probably use the basement for safe storage until you get/build a house, but you may want to look it up first (you don't want to store your stuff and have it despawn).

Alchemy ingredients show up with 4 effects, they're easy enough to pick out. Any kind of ore or ingot is a smithing ingredient, along with leather and stuff to make leather out of. Gemstones can also be used with smithing to make jewelry, and there's a spell to transmutate iron ore into silver and silver ore into gold.

Dragon bones and scales are also used for smithing, they make the best weapons and armour in the game.
