I've watched at least 3 videos over the 4 hour mark critiquing a game. Good to listen to when you're doing homework or playing a game that doesn't require intense concentration.

it's not one game, but one time I watched a critique of every game in the Ultima series. I think the full thing was multiple hours. I think it covered every single Ultima game ever made and was made by a guy obsessed with the series

Do you think he went into enough detail? Maybe he should've made the video an hour longer just to be safe

Tbh i think this is a natural evolution of things as people take games more seriously. I'm sure you can find similarly lengthy written analyzes of movies and certainly of books. The video essay format being popular amongst gamers creates these videos that are ridiculously long.

There's quite a few of those. disappointing that there are people so upset with the new Star Wars movies they can release videos longer than the new Star Wars movies complaining about them.

Also, for things over like an hour I don't think you're expected to watch them in one sitting.

I use to be like "who the fuck watched 40 minute reviews of movies". Now Ill watch like 3 back to back. 4 hours is still insane tho. Or the movie reviews that are longer than the movie.

There are a lot of boring but very long reviews that bored college kids reminiscing about games they like will put up. Some get pretty good view counts too.

neo noir mystery iirc. based on the tidbit on the back of the book he is an awful writer with no grasp of syntax or descriptive writing so i didnt read it lol

in order to make the 4 hour video, that's a metric asston more filming and editing.

I hope. Unless it's just a single-take steam of consciousness, but somehow I think that's even worse.

I've thought about writing shitty books and self publishing it as an ebook one day. Actually I've been thinking about attempting to write a book explaining structural engineering to a layman, but I know there's already this book:

I need to read it, but there may be space for something like this specifically catered to buildings, with other topics like architectural design, fire consideration, energy conservation, and construction considerations in the mix. I don't know if I'll ever do it, but I think it would be cool.

this is who I had in mind when I saw the topic title, although I remember seeing some other game critique youtuber with videos that were consistently way longer than his (don't remember name though)

I don't really watch much of them personally since I find them kinda longwinded and generally think their long videos are less the result of having a lot to say and more the result of them not being very good at being concise. Sometimes a few well chosen sentences can go a long way. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the concept of long video game critiques

like sheesh I just went and clicked his 2 hour mario odyssey video (since it's a game I'm familiar with) to remind me of what he's like. I'm currently 6 minutes in and he's spent 10 seconds talking about odyssey and 5:50 comparing nioh and dark souls

I actually listened to this one all the way through - ShayMay is pretty underrated.

For what its worth, I dont think youre supposed to watch them in one sitting. I usually throw those types of videos on for showers or when Im playing something like Monster Hunter.

They probably appeal to the same types of people who listen to talk radio, where they don't necessarily intend to listen to everything that is said but just like to have that chatter in the background instead of music.
