There was a big guy in my platoon in basic training. He lost a ton of weight compared to when he started. But he was still a semi-chunky guy.

IIRC they relatively recently had to decrease some of the physical test requirements because too many people were failing out, so yes I'm sure it's possible.

Not unless they managed for waiver it for the current situation, but that seems unlikely to me.
You're obliged to pass a PRT, which involves meeting a minimum weight requirement for your height and being able to perform a minimum number of push up and situps and run a 1.5 mile run within a maximum time limit. The requirements being base on your age. ... Copied to Clipboard!

When I was in (2000), at the end of basic training, before you go into AIT, you have to pass your push ups, sit ups, and 2 mile run within the required parameters. Those who did not do so, went on to a program called FTB (fitness training battalion) for extensive PT until they could pass, and then move on to AIT. Generally, it is some of the heavier ones. I saw enlistees lose as much as 50-60 lbs in those 9 weeks, and they started off fat.
