Pros:
  • very beautiful, duh
  • Clever waypoint/tracking system + minimal HUD means you spend your time looking at the world and not reading a map
  • Very cool gear
  • They totally committed to the samurai aesthetic. I mean, haikus? Seriously?
  • Smart quality of life choices. E.g. you can just change the weather whenever you want, you can change sword skins without affecting stats, the horse doesn't run into things randomly, etc.
  • very satisfying combat. You always feel dangerous but it's not always easy
  • very fun stealth options.
  • Everyone says the story is crap but that ending got me good. A lot of it was quite flat but there were some solid moments.
  • Perfect size map. Plenty of biomes but no endless travelling
  • Basically assassin's creed without all the things that make assassin's creed games not fun

Cons:
  • maybe the worst enemy AI I've seen since the PS1 era without exaggeration. I remember the AI in MGS2 being smarter than this. Enemies just forget you're there if you run 20 metres away. Or if you stand in a slightly awkward spot they don't know what to do about it.
  • It's way too serious all the time. Jin is maybe the most serious man in any game ever, I think he makes one joke in the entire game
  • Why are the more interesting sidequests (e.g. lady masako) such a chore to play out? They give you so little reward it doesn't feel worth doing, which is a shame because the story is better in some of these
  • After maybe a hundred or more hours I STILL don't have the hang of the weapon swap controls with total fluidity. That system is an inconsistent mess.
  • Eventually all the cool novel things like Haikus and fox dens become very stale. It was fun the first 3 times, but after 40 of these it's not fun at all. At that point it does feel a bit assassin's creedy. The game could have had 3 Haikus and been better for it.
  • Game desperately needs a gear loadout system. Changing every piece of your outfit individually every time you need to do a different kind of task is a pain.

To begin with yes, but once lord shimura rejects you and you realise his entire samurai code is bullshit I went full ghost mayhem.

There's only so many honourable sword fights you can do before you want to see what happens when you throw a sticky bomb at someone.

The dumb enemy AI is keeping me from buying the game even on a sale. Can't stand that shit anymore.

The game literally is like a better Assassins creed.

Also, loadouts are the most requested thing by the community and sucker punch says they're working on it.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention in the Pros list:

The loading times are INSANE. I can't believe how quick this game is to load an entirely new area. I've counted, going from one side of the map to another and it's never more than 6 seconds. For reference, I'm also playing the Last of Us and that game takes almost 2 minutes to boot up for some reason.

(the one exception is when you're swapping visual gear upgrades. That seems to be kinda slow for some reason)

This is a big one too. Makes me curious how load times will be on ps5/xbsx, with the solid state drives and better tech.

TO be fair, they're pretty good in open combat. They will punish you for making a bad attack choice. It's just the stealth side of it that seems way too silly. Like enemies can't see you if you are 6 feet higher than the ground or if you are 30 feet away.

Again as I'm playing Last of Us this feels especially stupid because the AI in that game is wicked smart.

I platinumed the game around 30 hours? I'm not sure what you have been doing for 100 hours as the content isn't really there.

I appreciate the detail that went into the death animations but I would of appreciated a mix between them and ragdoll. I know its nitpicky but it really breaks my immersion when I kill a guy near the side of a ledge and hes floating on top of it.

Overall still enjoying my time with it. About to finish Act 2.

Im loving the game but I dont see how people think its any different from any other open world game

the birds are a neat design choice but they dont work well so fundamentally Im just going to the map and marking waypoints myself

meaning, its just more intrusive than just having a mini map and waypoints

the game itself is just your standard open world game with literally 400+ collectibles

but its done very well

I don't think it's fundamentally different per se, but it's more polished and takes out enough of the shit I hate from AC games that makes me enjoy it. It's the same concepts but executed in a way that is more fun.

Like I'm not spending heaps of time in the menu or doing some stupid escort mission or having to get 20 items before I can advance the story. Those things feel a lot more optional where they exist. I don't have to go through an annoying animation every time I pick up a collectible or get off my horse to do so. The busy work feels less busy.

Things move faster and I can get to the good stuff right away and it doesn't feel like I'm missing out too much. I liked that part of it.
