He was power-hungry, corrupt, and manipulative. He planned from the very beginning to sacrifice Harry Potter's life. Even Snape cared about Harry's life more than the cold, calculating Dumbledore who said "The boy must die."

Well, what's worse? One guy dying, or a dark lord's army taking over the world and murdering millions?

Callousness, manipulativeness, and/or jerk-assiness do not a villain make.

Operating under the assumption that there was no way for Voldemort to lose without Harry dying, the situation is literally the train track switch hypothetical.

"Ruthless calculus of war" and all that. Even Harry came to understand it. Dumbledore's decisions and plan were bad, but not wrong. And sometimes there are no good choices or plans.

having only seen the movies... didn't he also manipulate it so that said death is able to be immediately undone?

He didn't turn down being head of the Wizengamot or ICW though, and between those 2 & headmaster, he clearly was stretched too thin since he didn't do any of those jobs worth a damn.

Nope-- that was a lucky break due to Voldemort using Harry's blood in the graveyard.
