I just got home from work and I already need to leave my house in 12 hours to go to work....which seems like a fair amount of time but when you factor in that ill be asleep for (if Im lucky) 5-6 of those hours...

Americas work culture needs an overhaul.

Self-employment ftw. I used to think I was fat and lazy (I was) but once I started working for myself, as much as I wanted and when I wanted, I actually had a lot of motivation and initiative to work fairly often. Am I making bank? Not really, but I live within my means and I can't really put a price on the feeling of knowing I can finish a job and fuck off for a while if I want, or pick up something else if I need a bit of extra money. The peace I get at night knowing I don't have to lick some power tripping manager's chode or deal with shitty co-workers or sacrifice my body and time making someone else rich is just... fuck, it's the best. I hope the pandemic doesn't fuck it up any more than it already has though.

This is the inherent problem of working for someone else. If you want true freedom, self employment is the way to go. Even if you don't make as much, you'll ultimately appreciate that you can work on your own terms & that you gain direct benefit from your labor.

Never understood this, but guess that's exclusive to my work. As long as I'm in the office and get done what I need to get done I can do whatever else I want. And what I do is a public service, so not like anyone is getting rich off it

A mix of blue collar and white collar jobs, just anything I can get my hands on. I think I've done three dozen different types of jobs in the past two years, everything from building decks to walking dogs to data entry. That's another perk, no boring daily grind. Almost every job has been a new task, but I did have a few regular jobs that I preferred and was paid best for, mostly digitizing records and data entry for small businesses that didn't need or want to hire a full time employee to do so, and landscaping. Those have both taken a hit though. Shit's gonna get real tricky in about six months.

Sounds like that comes at the opportunity cost of not having a career. Doesn't sound like its for me

There are trade-offs, for sure, but this has been the only way I can work and keep my sanity. I'm currently trying to boost my skills though because the lack of security is becoming more apparent than ever. I might finally learn to code lmao.

The advantages have been incredible though. I've put more time into my physical fitness, lost a lot of weight, gotten my mental health under control, got sober, and I finally just found an incredible amount of peace and content within myself that I never had at any point in my life. That only happened because I stopped trying to force myself into the expected workaday world and put myself outside of the box. All of these things fed into each other in a positive way but I couldn't have done that working on someone else's schedule. That would've broken the chain.
