Allow inmates to bring their own clothes within a dress code, and provide clothes for those that don't have them. Cheaper and less dehumanizing. Uniforms serve no purpose these days except to further punish prisoners.

It's not. We're the only first world country that uses uniforms.

They'll obviously be searched. I did the same thing working for addiction recovery. But it's important to let them have an identity for the sake of rehabilitation.

I mean hell, if we can have prisoners who don't even stay in prison the full week, we can have prisoners bring in items.

Punishment is fine if it serves a purpose. Punishment just for the sake of punishment is very bad form.

As someone who did 7 months in jail, this is a stupid fucking idea

Also some of the uniforms are color coded depending on your status.

(where I spent) Brown uniforms for kitchen, red for violent, orange for general public, green for Trustie, yellow for mental health, etc

That I'm actually reasonably OK with, especially if they're still allowed to personalize. But the same system. Can be done in ways without uniforms. Thus why other countries don't use them.

It serves to differentiate them from the normal so their easily identifiable and cannot bland in.

Eh, in the unit I was in they only made you wear uniforms if you were outside your pod. If you were in your pod, or someone elses, or if you were outside shooting ball you didnt have to wear uniforms

But youre not wrong, they could have it done differently. I think full personalization is just dangerous though. Lots of druggies in jail who act sporadic as fuck, I wouldnt trust them with blue jeans or shoe strings or anything like that

I think my hometown jail doesnt have uniforms though, you can walk around with pocketless pants and T-shirts and stuff. No shoe strings obviously

Similarly to the popular new show Orange is the new Black in Canadian corrections, upon arrival at all Provincial jails/Intake centers an orange jumpsuit is the uniform issued all inmates. All personal clothing and possessions are bagged and stored. Federal prison sentences (2yrs to life) allow for pen packs of personal items to be sent in, following classification or pen placements. There is a thirty day window for an approved, limited list of items that can be sent in to a federal prisoner. This information is fully covered in the prep services offered.

Interesting, thanks for the correction. Argument still stands, I just expand it to include those as well.

No problem.

I don't disagree with you but also I wouldn't have a problem with uniforms and freedom to dress as you please (within reason obviously, like no giant gold chains or something) being tied to behaviour. Start people out in prison issue garb, after 30 days with good behaviour allow more freedom of choice. After 90 days allow more items to be sent in from outside and prisoners to have more options in clothes. If there are violations of proper conduct in the prison system, remove some of the freedoms regarding clothing.

I can honestly understand the reasoning behind uniforms to SOME extent, but to make it carte blanche for all prisoners regardless of behaviour or severity of sentence is definitely a dehumanization tactic.
