Like the country clearly needed some serious reforms, but a large majority of Russians wanted to keep their country intact. If you look at Russia today it isn't exactly doing much better than it was in the 80s.

Maybe we could have helped them become democratic socialist rather than fascist, not sure how we'd do it though.
