How much do you know about your father? Your grandfather? Your great grandfather? I want to go back in time, meet my ancestors, hear their stories, and write an anthology. But some of them have been forgotten, or nearly forgotten.

My dad died before I was one year old. All I know about him are from stories. And I feel like I just don't know enough.

What really gets me is the dates on headstones in a cemetery.

Like if some guy died in...1902, for example, and he was buried in your city's cemetery.

There's not a person alive who knew that guy. There is no emotional connection to that grave that exists anymore.

That's our fate, if we even get a headstone. A lot of people are cremated these days and have their ashes scattered.

Yeah, but it's even more depressing if they're forgotten. What if they were great people?

Yep. It's just sad. Once a month my wife and I will go clean her great grandmother's headstone and place new flowers in it (fake flowers in the cold months) and say a few words, and there's a bunch of graves that are just the flat engraved piece of cement in the ground instead of an actual raised tombstone, and so many of them are just faded and dirty and the deathdates are nearing 100 years old.

Even if I make a huge positive impact and am remembered through history books 200 years from now, no one living will have known me. And that's just depressing as hell.

Even then it's only decades. Go on and name a list of famous people from the 15th century....you probably can't. We have information on a lot of them, and if you looked it up you'll probably even see names you recognize but had no idea what century they lived in. No one will be able to name one without looking it up. It's weird to think no matter how successful, powerful or influential your legacy is, you'll still largely be unremembered outside of someone cramming for a history exam

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. My dad died back in January and I was super close with him, but he's now starting to feel like a dream. It fucking sucks, a lifetime of memories and I can't remember the sound of his voice. It almost feels like he never existed, like he was a dream.
