To save on costs. The PS3 was $599 at launch. Blu-Ray players were expensive cutting-edge technology at the time.

Because it had an HD DVD player. at the very beginning of that generation, Microsoft and Sony were actually in competition for what the new format to replace DVD would be. Sony ended up winning out because, understandably, they also distribute a significant number of movies and were able to dictate the format that they could use.
if you go online, or go to a thrift store, you can probably find some HD DVD format movies that were released when the industry hadn't fully decided on which format they were going to use. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz.
