This a) clearly overemphasized to try to make a point, b) the purpose of which is to try to have a more diverse history curriculum, and c) even if it wasn't, there's no chance of it passing.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

The representative instead suggested that schools devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand democratic processes.

"It costs us as a society in the long run forever when we dont understand our brothers and sisters that we live, work and play with, Ford said.

The state representative is sponsoring a bill that would require elementary schools to teach students about the civil rights movement.

Civics is nice and all but I'm fairly certain civil rights movement is one of the most beaten topics in US education.

Except for the implications that the movement "solved" racism in the US.

Nothing implicitly implied that it solved racism though. Even then, that's as simple as making sure history teachers clarify that point.

YOU'RE not doing ANYTHING except bitching that THEY want their history properly and truthfully presented.

Something they failed to do during my generation and current day...
Something they were unable to do before, either through railroading or lack of administrative and legislative support; which is exactly what is STILL happening, current day, so stop blaming it on THEM. The article stated that the Illinois Board of Ed would rather just ramp up their civics curriculum. Smfh...

They barely scratch the surface on the Civil Rights Movement. In schools its MLK, Rosa Parks, and that's basically it.

Hell in most college History degree plans African American History isn't required.

Leaders in education, politics and other areas gathered in suburban Evanston Sunday to ask that the Illinois State Board of Education change the history curriculum at schools statewide, and temporarily halt instruction until an alternative is decided upon.

At a news conference, State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford said current history teachings lead to a racist society and overlook the contributions of women and minorities.

Fair, next

That is true but how much more can they fit from one time period while also not neglecting everything else that happened, including other consequential movements in the country history.

Stop teaching the same points in every grade, and we've freed up lots of space in the curriculum

A comprehensive lesson plan that properly covers the Civil Rights Movement can be done. It's a major part of American history that goes back to Reconstruction, the events and figures should be covered because what's done now is insufficient

They talk about the same people. I learned about Carter G. Woodson, Hiram Revels, Asa Philip Randolph, James Baldwin, Fred Hampton, Fannie Lou Hamer, etc on my own time.
