A big part of it isn't about what they "did" its about what Americans "didn't". A large number of Americans didn't, and still don't, take the virus and related safety measure seriously. Europeans don't have the war with science the way some people here do.

Europeans have been accustomed to being told what to do since the age of monarchs.

In terms of Germany:

1. On the health side of things, we took the doctor's advice seriously and wore (and still wear) masks, avoided gatherings, etc. Furthermore it was viable for us to track possible infection chains to keep a handle on things, and our healthcare system wasn't overloaded

2. On the economic side: Germany has a system for such emergencies called "short-time". Employees work fewer hours and the government helps contribute towards lost income. In return, employers aren't allowed to fire anyone. This had the result that according to predictions, the German economy should recover by the beginning of 2022 in the worst case scenario.

Look at per capita cases or deaths, either way Europe did not do much better than the US. Many East Asian countries have literally 1/50th or less the cases/deaths per capita. The West refused to listen to Asian countries about masks and other countermeasures and now rather than admitting they're wrong they're just comparing themselves to other Western countries to pay themselves on the back rather than admit they may have made mistakes.

It's hilarious how they act like the science of masks evolved and we couldn't have known they worked when East Asia was wearing them from the start and University of Hong Kong published a study in Nature in February showing they worked. We now have studies saying the number one predictor of a low infection rate is wearing masks, you know what the countries with lowest rates did from the start and the West only begrudgingly started doing after being devastated by this for months.

that means roughly 1000 people on average are dying per day to the EUs ~150

for a single day maybe that isnt much difference but it means every day that gap widens and widens

Look at the data for East Asian countries and stop holding Europe up as some paragon. Again look at the data I posted that lists all countries. Some in the EU have per capita rates as bad or even worse than the US. That the US is a disaster doesn't mean the EU is great. It's just Western superiority refusing to admit they made mistakes. They made fun of Asians for masks and insisted they didn't work and now they claim the superior Western model is great because the EU did better than the US, literally one of the worst responding countries on the planet, while ignoring how awful they did compared to every East Asian country.

There was a reddit post about how New Zealand gave its citizens a lot of money to stay at home and the comments said it was misleading/a lie.

I don't get why people have to lie about this. I mean the US could have very easily contained coronavirus like many other countries did if the leadership wasn't so bad.

You have to ask yourself why am I comparing America to Europe when Europe didn't do much better? What is the goal here? Why wouldn't I compare it to countries that did better from the start and continue doing better? A lot of people don't realize they view everything with a Western centered view and so ridiculous comparisons like this happen. It would be like finishing in last place in a race and then asking what the guy who finished 3 places ahead of you did that you didn't while ignoring the racers that lapped you multiple times.

Obviously several Asian countries by far outdid everyone else. If S. Korea and Japan could get through this relatively unscathed there's no reason the US shouldn't have as well. But let's not pretend like there's no difference between the US and Europe response. The US is getting lapped by pretty much everyone but Brazil at this point.
