Reading people and learning how to bluff while being read are extremely important to the game. Online poker is not much different than playing against a computer. I figured you were going to a casino or something.

When you eventually take your game in person, I'd cut back your bets to low amounts again until you learn the meta game.

If you look at it, my cum. profits never dipped below 0...it means I've never lost any money playing poker. All losses have been from existing profit, ie bankroll

i like using my brain and thinking through strategy. it's a big part of the reason why i'm an engineer and pick up artist

i used to play some low stakes games with old friends and i was super meh. always watched the wsop and thought it was insane. have some extra time during the pandemic (WFH and i can't go out to find girls to hang with) so i thought i'd learn the intricacies of it. it does everything i want in that i can exercise my brain, show real progress and wins (via profits) and i can play as much or as little as i want

Yeah that's cool, but where did you get your start? Just working on the math in front of you, no particular starting guide?

well i already had basic knowledge of the game

then i studied specific hands, how strong they are and how to play them

i created a chart of exactly which hands i'm willing to play

how to play different scenarios (draws, top pairs, etc)

i also studied things like how much position matters, how to alter play depending on position

etc

i just watched a ton of youtube videos. googled a few specific articles. i suggest the poker bank on youtube

Even though I've gone through the process myself several times, picking up a new hobby is still a daunting feeling. Like, I know I'll learn the impenetrable lingo eventually, but it still feels like a wall that I can't recognize a foothold on. Poker Bank, thanks for that.

Eh, technically, I guess 1/2 way, but a healthy one. You're not gambling without money, and you're making your brain better, so that's a WIN

Happen to? Of course not. Happen to = if it comes up. You're 'every day for 8 years' with it. That's an issue, imo

that's why i forced myself to play with fake money for 2 months. there's a lot to learn. but sometimes you just gotta throw yourself in and practice. i have an aptitude for learning though, so if something interests me i take to it quite easily

i said almost every day. i gamble maybe 66% of the year, during basketball season, mostly to make the work day go by faster

how do crossword puzzles/sudoku make my brain better but gambling doesn't? it's the same type of strategy game, i'm still using my brain

tying money into the gambling just gives it stakes....if nothing is at stake, your brain doesn't perform optimally. and again, i play low stakes....i sat down with $50 that first day, turned it into $500 in 3 weeks without ever being down. i still never sit down with more than $50. if i lose that $50 i force myself to sit out for an hour and if i still want to play i'll only play 1 more.

and again, these are low stakes...i make more taking a crap during work hours

it seems like you just have a lot of negative thoughts associated with gambling

while i enjoy the thrill, i know i can go without it (i go the entire summer without gambling as it's basketball off season)

it's never been an issue for me...it's just something that provides extra stimulation in my life. i gotta get my stimulation somewhere (it's usually girls if we're being honest)

I can't speak on the pros of the brain for gambling, but I can speak on the pros of Sudoku. Every day solving Sudoku problems, at the most, is like $1.50 a day if you get the daily paper, but there is also 1M of them online right now for free.

And, not quite again. but I'm not saying you are, I'm just telling you to stop before it becomes an issue

I don't find any fun in it, tbh. Even when I win I don't really fell all that great. Money really isn't an issue for me, so it doesn't make me happy like it does a lot of people

And that's cool. I just hope you don't ruin your life. If you're careful and in it for just fun and not profit, more power to you
