Is it because they're TV nerds/enthusiasts who care about perfect black levels and other stuff that a normal person would never notice? I'd rather spend $800 than $2000 on a TV.

Most recommendations I see on Reddit suggest getting a TCL TV if you want to save money.

They recommend nothing less than the TCL 6 series, which only goes up to 65." But that could be a good TV, tbh. It's $800.

I bought a 55" 1080p LG in 2014 for $700. It's been a great TV.

TCL is great for bargain shopping. Got the 43'' 4k TV with the Roku built in for like $250. Not the best picture by any means in terms of what "actual" 4k is, but it's solid enough for what it is, and definitely great for that price.

is it really any different from a $150 tv? It's just a screen

I bought a 230 dollar TV for the hell of it and it looks fine for me.

Why do people need expensive TVs, exactly?

Wait, I thought you were laughing because you thought $800 was too cheap. And in 2014, you certainly couldn't find a 55" HDTV for $150.

I got a 55" 4K HDR TV in the ~$500 range. The worst aspect by far is the lack of inputs. It only comes with 2 HDMI ports, nothing else

Luckily I keep a 1080p TV and CRT for my other consoles, but it's still annoying to have to rotate my PS4, XBone, and Switch all the time.

I'm sure I'm also sacrificing some picture quality with the budget, but it's so much better than my previous display that I begrudge that much.

You could go with the 4 series if you want to save any more money, though having seen both in person in a real setting thats not in a store (my brother has both a 4 and a 6 series), I can safely say theres a big picture quality difference, especially with HDR.

DONT get a TCL, theyll fail right after the warranty period ends. Get a decent Samsung or something for like $800

Is there any data I can read anywhere that shows a significant difference in reliability between the two brands? I saw a Consumer Reports article that said TCLs reliability was just a notch below the major brands, but nothing to show a huge gap. And even then those results are going to be skewed because the major brands have a much bigger presence in the high-end market than TCL. The build quality and QA gap between a TCL and Samsungs $5000 8k TVs will be much wider than the gap between a TCL and the Samsung they sell at Walmart.

Idk what's not to understand about spend what you can afford. People on reddit do scale their recommendations when provided a budget. Of course more expensive TVs are nicer, whether you can afford it or not is a different question

I dont mind so much having HDMI gone as I also have a CRT in the room, but it came to a head when I wanted to play Metroid Prime and Echoes on my flatscreen, realizing there was no way to hook a GameCube up to it was a bit of a pisser. Had to go use my sisters TV. Thankfully anything else will either be better on the CRT or available through HDMI
There actually is a non mod solution for HMDI output for the GC:

It's $100 though. Technically cheaper than GC component cables these days, though.
