I have to go with the N64 controller on that one.

Nintendo made amends with the Gamecube controller, really nice, except maybe for the C-Stick, which felt a bit too small, but not too many games that I played really made significant use of it, so it wasn't much of an issue.

The one I hated the most was the one where you had to turn on the light before the Boo got you.

Ah yea, I remember that one. That's one of the mini games where I felt like no matter how fast I rotated the joystick it would only just barely let you win if you did.

I really don't get the dislike for the N64 controller. Other than the fact that it just seemed a bit strange and the joystick wasn't the best, it's not a bad controller. I was also never confused as to how to use it.
I was never confused about how to hold it, I just got annoyed with how basically nothing used the dpad section so you always had your hands cramped together on the analog + button sections. Maybe it was just Nintendo not expecting the stick to be as important as it ended up, but it just irked me that there was this whole side that was essentially worthless.

I also didn't really care for the C buttons, I would've preferred a 3x2 layout of 6 equal-sized buttons like the 6-button Sega pads. And on the rare occasions you used it, the dpad was not great.

There's so many problems I have with controllers in general it's difficult to choose. But I gotta go with 3DS. They somehow managed to make an even worse analog stick than the N64, and it doesn't even have a good d-pad to make up for it. As much as I dislike Wiimote motion controls in some instances, it's an addition on top that doesn't have to be utilized. And is sometimes used decently.

Yeah I feel like the Wii remote worked best when it was used as a pointer, and not so much when it was used for motion tracking. The sweet spot for me was games that used the remote only. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors, Other M (for all the flaws that game had the controls worked out for me), Punch-Out, that stuff was what I was after. Games that required a nunchuck, especially ones that probably could have worked without it, were kind of an annoyance.

3DS's circle pad never really bothered me too much, but the right analog nub on the New 3DS was just... not it. Thankfully not too many games (at least that I played) used it much. The bigger issue I had was the buttons, specifically how close to the edge the A button was. It was a bigger problem on the regular DS, but games that made extensive use of the A button just cramped my hand so bad. Like I loved Mario Kart DS but putting the gas on A killed me. I don't think 3DS really improved on the design as much as developers recognized the issue and made more thoughtful control schemes, so I still consider it a flaw in the design.

Atari 5200 for sure. Take all the drifting/technical issues you get from Switch controllers and others, and then make it some clunky box thats annoying to hold and use.

Man I thought DKCR was the absolute worst for a Wiimote. It was unplayable with shake as roll and needed a mod to fix it.

Now that you mention it, I never really thought about how often I used the D-Pad or the Joystick. I do know a lot of games gave you the option and I almost always went with the D-Pad though. I guess it's not the best D-Pad but it seemed ok to me. If you use primarily the Joystick for everything I can see how that would be an issue though.

The C buttons were pretty weird, but overall I didn't mind the A/B buttons being bigger. I suppose my opinion on that would be different depending on what game I was playing.

The Wii U controller looks like it would be atrocious but is actually just fine. I had no problem using it for Smash, aside from the right analog being a bit awkward.
