Insurance companies like to write off hurricanes as an Act of God. Therefore, God hates the border wall.

That's not Trump's fault. It's a once-in-a-lifetime, outstanding disaster that came with no warning. Historic hurricane was because of acute climate changes caused by immense pollution from Asian countries. A-yup, not Donald's fault.

If I had to guess, I'd say they put that part of recently and the concrete hadn't finished curing. Even with a couple days of curing concrete is a fraction of its 28 day cure strength. Especially because those dudes with the hard hats.

I think it's only a category 1 hurricane, which it was surely designed to withstand. But structures are far more vulnerable to collapse during construction. This is funny, but these things do happen.

Aren't they supposed to put up supports while the concrete is curing, though? I'm pretty sure I've seen plenty of buildings under construction with supports in place when they're putting the walls up. This isn't even the only incident we've seen of Trump's wall getting blown down by wind.

Probably. But some contractors get lazy. Local collapses actually happen all the time because contractors don't put in proper temporary support. Or you may have just watched contractors freaking out because they were supposed to be putting up the braces when the storm hit lol. t's a relatively common source of litigation, along with concrete issues. And even then, temporary structures are designed in a pretty shitty which is then compensated with gargantuan safety factors.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that stability failures typically result from system issues (rather than element issues) that are ignored or that these types of things are often stiffness rather than strength controlled.

There could be other things, but there's really no reason a category 1 should take down anything aside from the possibility it was still under construction.

Edit: Another possibility is that the engineer overlooked it like a dumbass. You can't rule that out of I'm honest.

But all of that is speculation. I can think of half a dozen other reasons it might have fallen, but they mostly fall under "neglect."

Another possibility is local soil conditions. There's no way they have detailed soil data for everywhere this wall is.

Isn't that supposed to be done as part of a geological survey when you're doing this kind of thing? I'm definitely not an expert in this line of work, but it would make sense.

Yes, but you'll only get as much data as you're willing to pay for. Typically a geologist and a geotechnical engineering firm will compile relevant data and make foundation recommendations, which are then passed on to the structural engineer. But you never know when you'll hit a random clay deposit over several miles (which I imagine this is lol). And it might be cheaper to occasionally have to fix a part that blows down once in a while than to get that data. Kinda defeats the purpose of a wall in the first place though.

Edit: As a general rule, how robust a building is to disasters has a lot to do with how much the owner is willing to pay. There's a legally mandated minimum safety (which 99% of buildings are built to), but structures can be designed to be more robust. Especially in the realm of earthquakes.

That 99% figure is also only really talking about the US. Other counties have different cultures regarding their buildings. Japan, for instance, uses a fair amount of "base isolation" for apartment buildings. Basically the entire building rests on pads which allow the ground to shake beneath the building without moving the building itself. Generally these apartment buildings cost a premium rent wise, partly because your property will be relatively still instead of flying everywhere.

In the US, buildings are typically designed to survive one very big earthquake, but not 2. So if a bit earthquake every does hit CA, expect many "standing" buildings to be demolished. This happened in Christchurch, New Zealand where like half the buildings in the city were demolished due to damage. I can't remember the exact figure right now though, but it devastates the city.

Sorry for the digression but when you get me started it's hard to stop lol.

This appears to be fake news

https://heavy.com/news/2020/07/hurricane-hanna-border-wall/amp/

Miroff added that Hanna hit southern Texas at night, whereas the video shows daytime footage and he also added that the section of the wall around the Rio Grande Valley is on the river levee and not in the desert. He later mentioned that CBP officials in Arizona stated there have been no recent reports of a wall collapse.
CBP confirmed to Heavy that the video is not from Hurricane Hanna.

The video circulating on social media appears to be from June 2020 when high winds caused several border wall panels that were pending additional anchoring to fall over at a construction site near Deming, New Mexico.

Makes sense to me. Especially since it seems unlikely construction workers would be there during a tropical storm/ hurricane.
