It is more addictive than its ever been that's true, I think because online multiplayer is so widespread - competition against real people is addicting. I've no doubt it does cause problems in some.

Generally speaking though time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time.

Odd that he specifies video games as "a career" as his argument, and not as a hobby.

He's right, gaming can be a good hobby, but for most folks it's an escape no different than drugs. These folk are addicted to playing games, gaming 3+ hours a day, if they devoted that to something of real value a lot of folks problems would go away.

Why are his podcasts popular? This is a serious question. I've seen clips and stuff from it over the years but I've never listened or watched a whole show. Is it because he covers a wide range of different subjects?

I listen to fun ones. It's like being around my friends and just listening. They slip in and out of comedy and insightful shit, just like my people. 80% of the time Im cooking and eating during. Easy to multitask with. Makes cooking seem less like a chore

Its pretty much the huge range of subjects and how all of his podcasts are usually real long, and Joe's style of "interviewing" is basically just having a conversation with whoever he's talking to, which makes it feel like so much less of an interview.

There can be a bit of an issue, since Joe never really challenges anything his guests say, which means when he has a more polarizing person on (like Ben Shapiro a few days ago) he basically just lets them go through their talking points on his platform (hence why he shows up every 3 days as "alt right" Joe Rogan)

There aren't too many podcasts where you can see the same guy talk the same way to Bernie Sanders, Elon Musk, Rick Baker, and Tony Hawk.

Also great if you have a lot of "down" time (ex. commuting or busywork that you can put headphones in while you work) because Joe tends to upload about 10 hours of podcast every week.

See, when I read into people I use their past experience to define what they're talking about instead of use it to weaponize against them. I read that and think "so he probably means it's a waste of time to play games like he once did".

Also, a lot of people definitely have an addiction to games. It's just they don't admit it or even see it cause it feels stupid to admit. The stigma would be, you're addicted to video games? What are you 7? But it's a real thing.

His point is that if you spend 5 hours sitting on the couch playing video games you dont really get any benefit from it once your done.

Theres many other hobbies that people indulge in that can benefit them physically, socially, mentally, etc.

Joe even said video games are fun, and he himself has spent countless hours playing them.

why running/jog? I only do that when someone chases me

hiking and swimming are boring

martial arts doesnt seem fun

id MUCH rather hike, swim, ride motorbike, fight people in video games

its the SAME experience, like playing sports game va playing football

plus ALL of those are time wasters, and they function similarly to gaming

I gain more mentally, socially from gaming than ANY of the above

espwciallly since gaming is 10x more social
