Here's some differences someone made a list of:

>Different map, naturally
>Coneria does not have a defense system. You're pretty much the only thing protecting it and it is easy for Corneria to get fucked if a battleship attacks it while your off at Meteo or something
>From Normal mode onwards, Andross will begin deploying battleships after the first wave. This is important: Andross deploys them in real time (unlike in the final where it's more like a cutscene) and if you don't stop it, then it can claim a planet. This can also happen to planets that you've already freed, meaning that Andross can RECLAIM them, forcing you to do a different variation of the level
>Space dogfights don't have auto-aim, making it hard to actually hit stuff
>Mission objectives are different: Mostly destroying stuff. Bases do not seem to exist outside of Andross' fortress
>Star Wolf does not seem to exist in this build: I didn't finish normal, so they might show up there, but they were totally absent in easy mode
>There's no final boss: You destroy Andross' core in the center of the fortress and the game gives you a "To Be Continued" screen.

Apparently for the Yoshi Island cart, the world map might've been taking up too much space (cuz the SFX chip only could support 2MB games which the final ROM for Yoshi's Island is) and that's why the had to downgrade to some dull paper map.

Man, that really sucks >_>

I'm not too familiar with 65816, but I've done enough x86 and Z80 stuff to know simple equs when i see them. The real meat and potatoes is buried deeper

On the plus side, other than formatting issues, this looks like it may be the real original source rather than something disassembled. We could always do that with ordinary ROM dumps, but this is commented appropriately

So I tried out that beta Yoshi's Island ROM and it's pretty different >_> I'll list some of the things I saw.

  • The entire sound set is just Super Mario World music and sound effects
  • The map is obviously different, but all worlds have the same layout with recolors. Only World 1 has the animated enemy sprites in the backgrounds
  • Yoshi actually has to hold down the tongue button to keep stuff in his mouth. If you let go of the button, he'll either spit it out immediately or swallow it immediately
  • There's a throw meter for eggs. If you throw the egg immediately, it'll just do some unimpressive arc. His max throw is what the default is in the final game
  • There's only 2 playable Yoshi colors >_> Black and Green. There's orange and white yoshis in the overworld though
  • You start out with 30 seconds and can go higher than that if you collect more time. When you get hit, you actually lose a bunch of seconds at once (like 3-5) and then it starts sticking down 1 second at a time. Once you're low (like <10), then you don't lose extra seconds from getting hit. Mario doesn't go in a bubble, instead he just sorta crawls around on the ground lol. There's ? clouds that pop out little clocks with feet that add 1 second to your time. If your time is low, it has this REALLY annoying beeping sound for the entire time. Also if your time hits 0, baby Mario immediately gets kidnapped and you cannot interrupt it at all.
  • Yoshi is invincible while baby Mario is off his back and doesn't flinch at all from enemies.
  • Y by default throws eggs and A is your tongue button
  • You can't eat Shy Guys and turn them into eggs, but if you stomp on them, then they turn into eggs.... >_> It seems like you can't get eggs from eating enemies at all in this version
  • There's 2 unused Bandit minigames. One where you're helicopter Yoshi and baby Mario hands you bombs for you to drop on Bandit's houses (LOL). The other one is another helicopter Yoshi one where you're chasing a train full of Yoshi eggs (driven by Bandit) and trying to grab them with a crane and put them in your own train (driven by baby Mario).
  • Also some of the bonus games are different, like there's this weird wizard baby face in the scratch lottery one (instead of Baby Mario's face), and the game that would normally be match 2 cards is just a coin bonus where you just pick 3 cards from the set to get coins; kinda similar to the scratch lottery.
  • As far as I can tell, all the levels are selectable, but some are definitely incomplete. Also most of them are totally different from the final version.
  • You can't game over. If you lose your last life at 0 lives, it just underflows to 999 lives >_>
  • Lava doesn't instantly kill you....sort of. If you step in it, Yoshi will bounce away and baby Mario will fall off. But if you hit lava again (either from the bounce or stepping in it) without baby Mario on your back, you instantly lose a life

Here's another one.

  • If Mario flies off a cliff from getting hit, the snifits will come and slowly raise him up to the sky. You can interrupt this and take Mario back as long as there is time on the clock. But if they reach the top of the screen, they take Mario away, even if you have time left.
  • Those walls in the caves that you have to destroy by throwing eggs at them can be eaten by Yoshi's tongue, but it's really slow since he only eats 1 block at a time >_>
  • The aiming reticle locks on to enemies when Yoshi is trying to throw eggs. If you hit R, it'll go to the manual aim where it sweeps up and down like in the final version
  • The eggs don't break when they hit stuff and can be collected again after they bounce off the object
  • When your timer is extremely low (like 3 seconds), the snifits will float around on the top of the screen like vultures lol. This is a cool detail I wish they kept in the final version >_>
  • You can only flutter jump once per jump

People are piecing together that Nintendo was most likely working on a Donkey Kong game for SNES before Rare pitched DKC to them. They then likely repurposed their own DK game into modern day Yoshi's Island, hence why that game is so wildly different from other Mario games!

Sprites for an "elf baby" OC were found in the datamine. Suggesting it wasn't even going to be Baby Mario originally.

Confirmed: the 1995 Shoshinkai build of Super Mario 64 can be compiled from the source code. Meaning earlier builds of OoT are undoubtedly able to be compiled too.

This is it guys. The only thing that could possibly be bigger at this point is if the original Pokmon Red/Green source got out. (With the front sprites of the scrapped pokmon. I wanna see Gorochu dammit.)

Edit: There's a Luigi folder in the SM64 code~.

Edit 2: Ah fuck. The SM64 source code is apparently incomplete.

But there's Luigi sound files still in tact. One voice clip was posted. Definitely Martinet using the same voice for Luigi he always has.

Edit 3: Someone pointed out that the clip is used in SMBA: SMB2. Now there's a dispute over whether we got trolled or if Nintendo just reused the voice clip they had on hand. (Which would make sense given they also reused OoT Link voice clips in the GBA ALttP.)

It's well known that they planned on Luigi and a split-screen multiplayer mode but scrapped it due to hardware limitations.

But now someone might be able to recreate what it might have looked like in the PC port. Just like hackers managed to recreate the scrapped multiplayer features in Luigi's Mansion complete with a functional Mario as 2P.
