That would've been the perfect balance of bullshitty logic, emotional impact and fun to wrap up the whole thing imo.

I forgot that Independence Day 2: Electric Boogaloo was a thing. How was it?

I don't like it. I prefer that - either out of basic respect, sheer desperation / lack of manpower, or a little of both - they trusted Russell with a jet fighter. I also prefer that he didn't go up there to explicitly sacrifice himself, that was a choice he made in the moment when there was no other winning scenario.

This is probably one of those movies that I'd loathe if it came out today, and is riding purely on childhood nostalgia, so I don't quite know why I'm overanalyzing it. But I think what made it work is that, while there was arguably some tonal clash overall between drama and camp, on a scene-by-scene basis they kept things pretty consistent - this is a dramatic / horror scene, this is a campy scene, etc (by comparison, a lot of people complain about Marvel movies undercutting drama with an ill-timed joke). This cut ending would have detrimentally turned the movie's big dramatic payoff into pure camp.

i think watching a propeller plane go into a stall to hand-deliver the missile might be a little too silly for me

the visual of a cropduster flying around as high-tech aircraft and spacecraft wage battle is pretty amusing though

i'm glad they filmed this and also glad they didn't use it

the whole concept is unrealistic. an alien civilization able to cross the vastness of space in a fleet that large would have absolutely no problem destroying us, there would be no fight.

another reason i imagine they cut the scene though is its hard to accept a prop plane could do anywhere near that damage when it exploded. you can hand wave that away with the fighter jet since it had live missiles on it, even though they're designed not to just explode like that.

There's a missile on the biplane.

The fuck? Who the fuck wants to see a sober suicide or training for it?

Or realism? We thru realism out the window hacking with an apple.

Yeah the choices here don't make sense. Likely they changed it to pad out the runtime or something
