just got the email from the district
my girls are going into 4th and kindergarten and will start the school year with virtual learning
what a shitty way to start kindergarten =(

The alternative was going to be catching/spreading covid, not death.

Either way at least it's only kindergarten, I can't even remember anything pre-high school, and even then...

she's pretty fucking hyped to start school, get on the bus with her big sister, go to meet a teacher, etc
it just sucks that the normal experience is being taken from her in this way

also i'm dying to know what kind of virtual learning is going to take place in kindergarten
it's going to be, like, nothing

while you dont remember Kindergarten, its been proven to be the most crucial time for a kid to start learning. It literally sets up the rest of your life for learning.

Now, that CAN be done online. Its just way harder.

Busses alone would be super-spreaders. You should really appreciate that it's safer this way and probably better in the long run

i actually watched my older daughter go through the last 3 months or so of school virtually in 3rd grade
i think i can count on one hand the things that she learned that were new things

I don't think anyone is actually saying that. Virtual classrooms are almost definitely worse. The issue is the risk of in person schools during a pandemic.

Thats never been a thing here. I dont think a single sane person would say that virtual classrooms are anywhere close to as good as in person instruction.

I think schools around here are opening in Fall since the town barely got impacted by the virus. My kids going into grade 2 and most of the virtual stuff was a joke for grade 1 which is expected between grade 1-3. He can read pretty well and knows basic math. Good enough at that age.

Ive also got a kid starting kindergarten and another entering second grade. Our school system gave everyone the option of virtual for the first 9 weeks, and I think their hope was that a bunch of people would take that option to thin out the herd at the school. The steps theyre taking at the school are actually pretty impressive. The two wealthier areas around us are writing angry letters about how our plan is so much better.

The bus situation is doing the best with what they have. Two to a seat, with a preference for same household people next to each other, masks of course, all windows open and thorough scrub downs. I probably wont have them use the bus.

Part of me feels like its not as much as a problem for my kids since they already had it, but at the same time, we dont really know shit, do we?
