It's not essential, but I think it adds a realistic (and in some cases, humorous) touch to fiction. I dunno, I guess it's strangely comforting and amusing to know McDonald's would still be around in the future predicted in some sci-fi films, for example.

It's kind of necessary if you're writing contemporary fiction. I don't know if you know who William Gibson is but he actually was sued for using brands in his stories and to this day it's still a legal qaugmire

I don't really know who he is but the name does ring a bell.
