I often wonder if we are growing as a people... or in fact, regressing.

I just started playing skyrim for the first time a week ago >_>

Its pretty fun but the higher difficulties just seem to add HP which seems kinda cheap.

It's a shame Bethesda might never produce anything better now.

And we're probably at least five or six years away from Elder Scrolls 6 given that they're focusing on Starfield first.

Aka, a fifteen-ish/+ gap between installments.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

My university absolutely shutdown for several days when this game came out. It'll always be my benchmark for gaming impact because of that.

They hit their peak with Morrowind and have slowly regressed.

The changes from Daggerfall into Morrowind made sense and still maintained a fairly comprehensive RPG for the time. But then Oblivion took all the wrong lessons from Morrowinds successes and criticisms and then Skyrim doubled down.

And mind you, neither Oblivion nor Skyrim are bad games, but Skyrim isnt even an RPG and Oblivion was a terrible RPG, and both are marked with longevity issues sans mods, and even then.

People like to argue that you get your moneys worth when its a 60-150 hour game, but that doesnt really fly when previous games in the series had twice as much content and the quality isnt even better, and sometimes was even worse.

Anectotally Ive put probably 5-6000 hours into Morrowind since its release, and I technically have still not done everything in the game because so much of it is enjoyable to go back and play again. I put about half those hours into Oblivion and while the guild questlines were the best in the series, there isnt as much to keep you coming back, and with Skyrim, everything is worse. The content there is crap (only the main story really holds water and even then) and doesnt even last that long. In the time it takes to just start the Mages Guild questline in Oblivion you can finish the College quests in Skyrim. Thats just bad, especially when the former is also a much better questline to boot.

What Skyrim got right though over Oblivion was immersion and combat. Even with Morrowinds now heavily dated graphics, it was always easier to immerse into its world than Oblivions and Skyrim at least learned the right lesson there, and while I generally think that Morrowinds combat was fine in theory (just unfinished with a lack of animations for missing/dodging), Skyrim at least made the combat very engaging and intuitive, taking away the biggest negative Oblivion had going for combat. But RPG and story wise, it learned all the wrong lessons from people who didnt want RPGs and just wanted sandboxes.

And the saddest part is is that 9 years later, mods have still not added all that much to Skyrim in these aspects. Some good ones out there but they dont really overhaul either one and act more like elaborate bandaids.

Morrowind has been the only game that's ever fully pulled me into its world. Every area feels unique and the history makes it feel like a living place. It never felt like a chore to explore or get lost because youd stumble upon something new and breathtaking. The game never held your hand and just let you loose to really stumble around and create your own story. It's sad that there probably wont be a game like it again since Nobody has the patience for a game like it.

9 years with no sequel and the game that they're working on instead of the sequel still has nothing shown
