It isnt a garbage game, by any means. I dont think its good, but it isnt a horrible game... probably like a 4/10.

But it took the series in a wrong direction.

Honestly, I enjoyed Paper Mario: Sticker Star a lot when I played through it in '14. In the early years of the 3DS, most first-party games played it really safe (I.E. Super Mario 3D Land, Kirby Triple Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Pokemon X/Y), so Sticker Star was actually a refreshing change of pace for me. I thought the visuals were some of the best on the system, the soundtrack was even better and the physical-comedy angle of the story was entertaining in an old-school way. Hell, I even had fun with the battles, though the criticisms of the battle system are absolutely valid. (My main issue with the game was how obtuse the exploration could be at times, especially in the Wiggler Forest section or whatever.)

The problem is that there's a difference between what works for a single "experimental" entry, and what works for an entirely new direction in a series. Things like a lack of EXP or original characters aren't that bad in a single game, but the Paper Mario devs decided to double down on these aspects and the returns quickly diminished. You could compare this to what happened with Archer - one "dream season" can be fun and intriguing, but it wasn't long before most viewers wanted to get back to business.

In a nutshell, I think Sticker Star is fun in a vacuum but did more harm than good in the long run. Your mileage may vary.
