I don't mind wearing a mask, I mind the connotations it carries. Few things we choose to wear are without symbolism and in a time when mask-wearing is a political statement, choosing to wear a mask pretty much defines which side of the aisle you're on. I'm sure they're somewhat effective, though clearly not the silver bullet people seem to think they are, but with the rate of infection being so high, it's not a matter of "if" you're going to catch it so much as "when". Wearing a mask might prevent me (or people around me) from getting the coronavirus right now, but eventually we're all going to catch it. And when what you're doing isn't saving lives so much as slightly delaying an inevitability, well... it's hard to give a damn.

masks help prevent spread. it's that simple. and you're worried about what other people will think of you in the defining moment of our lives.

people like you suck.

Yea let's just all catch it at the same time and see what happens to our hospitals.

Well, and this is important, back when everything was peaking, we were still being told not to wear masks.

And we were still being told not to wear masks when things started opening up after the peak, and we didn't see an increase.

And then we were forced to wear masks as things continued to open, and we saw spikes in cases again.

Masks aren't a silver bullet.

Yes everyone in the world in their lifetime now will get the virus. Where did you come up with this logic? Does everyone in their lifetime get the flu also?

Not necessarily. Vaccine progress so far is looking promising af. Covid doesn't appear to mutate quickly, and there are a number of candidate vaccines that are coming along at breakneck speeds. Some optimistic figures put a vaccine being distributed as early as November, which if you went on lockdown in March, we're now halfway there.

It's absolutely plausible to make it to a vaccine without ever contracting the virus.

Maybe you should take a look at other countries to determine the effectiveness of masks, not states in the US wherein a significant portion of the population think the virus is fake news and are happily attending covid parties.

And it's not supposed to be a silver bullet. All that matters is dropping the transmission rate which in turn drops the reproduction number and if masks do that even in the slightest way then it will save lives.

It is quite important to wear mask. But when the masses are in revolt, the authorities should rather present educational facts to convince the masses to wear mask. Of course, this is for the good of the public. A well informed fellow wouldn't wait to be reminded to wear mask, regardless of if the virus is a hoax or not. Prevention is better than cure.

Part of it was assuming the infected would be smart about it, so they said only the sick should wear masks. But, then the infected were dumb asses, plus the asymptomatic carriers not knowing they were carriers, so they recommended masks for everyone. Trump not closing borders back in November/December was just the icing on the shit cake.

Yeah lets not use a condom cause STIs are increasing each year and the chance of a baby is high. Oh look now I have a baby and can't support the child nor myself. Who will help me? Call me whatever but I generally don't help people like that. It's similar to people who drink and drive. You all are playing with fire and if shit gets fucked up they come running to rich people for help. Man up, you fucked up. Excuses, excuses.

How would that change things? I'm opposed to masks, and it has nothing to do with Trump. They're too hard to breathe in and so uncomfortable that I constantly have to reposition it if wearing one.

then it sounds like you're incapable of venturing out in public. sorry. use curbside pickup to get what you need and just stay home.

That's not how it works. As long as I'm allowed to go into public spaces without a mask, I will continue to do so.

There are very few places I've encountered that strictly enforce the rules regarding mask use. I do comply if I'm not given the choice.

Are you trying to say they might not have known know how it was spread, despite it being in the name (coronavirus), or how to inform people to shield themselves from that. Interesting. Some experts we have. Which specific experts should've been on the ball you ask: CDC Director. Surgeon General. Head of Infectious diseases at NIH. etc. etc.

No need for the insults. I wear a mask if it is required, but most places in my area are lax about the rules. I won't suffer through wearing one if I can avoid it.

Just finished a book on the 1918 pandemic.

A lot of weird and crazy stuff happened. Nobody should panic because "it's only the flu" was a common sentiment just before the second wave really kicked off. That sentiment changed pretty quickly because in the following weeks the general consensus was that a calamity of biblical proportions was upon the people.

Spitting in the street could get you beaten and arrested.

A rumor floated around that dogs were carriers of the disease and people turned in their family pets to the police to be executed

Another rumor was that this disease was an attack by Germany (remember this started right at the end of WW1) and there were accounts of Germans being murdered and hung in the streets.

Parents would die in their beds from a violent pneumonia and their spouses would lay in that same bed still alive but immobile from the disease, covered in feces and blood while their children cried and starved in the room over. Family and friends wouldn't even enter to save that child too terrified to be themselves infected.

There were accounts of trains leaving in one station in India with the living and arriving at their destination a day later with carts full of dead.

You know... just shit like that.

There weren't a whole lot of freedom or die anti-mask types roaming around after the second wave.

When the 2nd wave hits (and it will) depending on the numbers if it's high like Spanish Flu I can see these people not wanting to wear masks sweating their ass and putting one on. The Spanish Flu showed the power of a virus that is transmitted from human to human. Once these non-mask people see their kids or partner shitting in bed and bleeding dying then they'll understand. Sometimes sadly there needs to be an impact in someone's life before they make certain changes for the better.
