can't regular hdmi cables be used for 4k? I keep seeing some hdmi cables selling for over 70 bucks though.

theres different tiers of hdmi cables. Some that support 1080 60, some that support 4k 30. Some that support 4k 60. Some that support higher

The 4K ones need to have a higher data transfer rate; regular HDMI cables won't work properly.

Ive never paid more than maybe $10 or $12 for my cables and never had any issue at all

$3-10 cables work 100% as good. It's a digital signal, unlike analogue cables with gold plating. Just be sure it meets the classification as a user noted above.

To an extent. Always know what the specifications of the cable are though. There are cables that sell for $1000 or more and those are 100% a scam. But if you want a cable capable of 4k 60fps or more its going to be more expensive than some budget $2 amazon basics cable

As long as they support the standard for your device, nothing else really matters.

Get some Monoprice certified premium cables and you should be fine. If it's a long run, like 25ft or more you will want something with Redmere to ensure the signal doesn't degrade.
