Basically, rendering the game internally at a higher-than-native resolution and then displaying at native resolution.

The downside obviously being that it requires the GPU power of displaying at a higher resolution.

yes.

anti-aliasing uses pixels around edges and makes a best guess estimation to fill in the jaggyness, so you get a smeared effect.

yeah it's the best method as far as quality I'm pretty sure

but you gotta be able to render the game that high and still run it lol

I set Metro Redux to 8x SS and the FPS dropped from like 200fps to 45fps, and I couldn't figure out why it got wrecked so hard despite relatively minor improvement in jaggies.

Now I realize I just made it 8x the native resolution of 1080p lmao

I noticed NVIDIA's software actually lets you force SS on older games that don't even have it as an option. I think I'll try it on Skyrim.

Super Sampling is anti aliasing so you're going to need to be more specific.

If you mean FXAA then yes Super Sampling is better than that.

For all the hate that NVIDIA Experience gets, it seems to do a pretty good job tailoring settings automatically to meet your expectations for frame rate vs. quality

most of that hate is overblown. you have one bad experience with sofware like that, or hear about it from someone on the internet, and it gets blown out of proportion.
