The US hasn't used nukes against another country during wartime since WWII, and despite how scummy the CCP is, I would thing (hope?) that not even they want to be the first to press the button on a nuclear holocaust. ...But of course, I could be dead wrong.

No, but it depends on what the initial salvo looks like. If it hits a stalemate in "neutral territory" like islands off the coast, both countries may try and wait out for sufficient international pressure to force a quick surrender.

I think you would only see nukes either as a first-strike, or as an attempt to retaliate if one side faces overwhelming defeat in an initial battle as the only other means available to stop the advancing Force.

It's actually the opposite of guaranteed. The number one thing that cannot be destroyed without both nations collapsing is their trade relationship. If one falls, the other collapses with it.

Nuking either country would just guarantee that the offending country falls into a super economic depression it'll never recover from.

They wouldnt nuke, it would only ensure mutual destruction which defeats the purpose of a war.

If war broke out, it would start as a conventional war. However, the CCP will never give up their power which means that once they are on the verge of defeat they'll launch their nukes and take everyone down with them. Xi Jinping is a Mao fanboy and Mao would have happily killed off half his population if it meant winning.

The USA and China might not nuke each other directly, but they might gamble that escalation can be contained -- and nuke another country that's aligned with their enemy.

I really don't see any scenario in a conventional conflict where either the USA or China can topple each other's governments through brute force. So if you can't inflict a decisive defeat and ensure a long-term peace, what's the point?

Nuking would happen if things looked really bad for one side. Like a war over Taiwan would probably stay conventional, a war over say SEA would stay conventional, but any attempts by the US to invade China or China to invade the US would likely result in nukes if the invading force wasnt able to be quickly defeated.
