It's not the references that are bad, but how he uses them. Don't remind me of what I loved, remind me of why I loved it. The fucking Pac-Man scene was atrocious.

I was actually referring to the book, didn't like the movie but thought parts of it were good, and it at least parts of it were legitimately fun.

The worst thing about Ready Player One is that it's a blatant example of "nice guy" self insert fantasy.

The author has some very messed up views on women

I wouldn't mind the pop culture spam if the guy had an ounce of prose.

There's a part in the book where the main character theorizes that the game's creator was one of those socially awkward people who throws geeky references at other people in the hope that they'll get it and like him.

But the thing is, that's exactly what I felt like the author was doing with the novel itself. I love pop culture and references to it, but stories built on references just don't work for me.

It was hyped before release, got the fake press reviews and all, but not praised once the public actually got their hands on it.

It just sounded like exactly what nerds would want. I was hyped. But the execution was awful.

No it gets a lot of praise from people even now, and has very good reviews on goodreads. People genuinely like it and I can't figure out why, it's so blatantly bad in so many ways, some not even subjective.

Like, there's a point where it creates a conflict, creates a solution, and moves on in the space of two pages, with none of the elements being mentioned again or doing anything to further the plot or improve characters, or even be entertaining.

Ah, goodreads, yeah never mind. People will read anything for the aesthetic of it, rather than prose, structure, wordplay, setups; same people who don't know real chocolate from Hershey.

That's a good example of what it should've been. Someone in discord suggested Cabin in the Woods, which I also agree with.

I think it's because you take books way more seriously than we do. I read it in a single night and had a really fun time doing so. I didn't sit there an think about how this and that didn't add up, or the female representation wasn't what I wanted it to be, or any of that. I picked a book up, started to read it, and was entertained enough to keep reading it until I was done. That = a good book to me

I don't take books super seriously though. I'm generally surface levels except for my absolute favorites. The problem with this is it wasn't fun, it was painful to read.
