Think the Aliens films, some Star Treks, Event Horizon I suppose, and others. Not really Star Wars. Think slow, silence shots of ships moving slowly through space, showing how cold and scary space exploration probably is, horror elements, analysis of reasonably complex philosophical, pyschological, sociological and religious themes.

How do you feel about this? Do we need more? How do you feel about this type of sci-fi film?

Agreed. I miss seeing good sci fi space movies. Weve definitely been lacking them lately.

Think the Aliens films
We have vastly different definitions of "serious sci-fi films."

You don't think Aliens is serious? I agree it's actiony, sometimes, and has stupid one-liners, but...it's pretty damned serious.

Look at Alien. Or Alien: Covenant. That's "proper" science-fiction.

I agree, but you won't get much support for that around these parts.

Studios aren't encouraged to make them because people are too dull for thoughtful and challenging stuff, so it doesn't make as much money. It's safer just to slap out some dumb shit than it is to risk it with something that requires the audience to think. Jumanji 2 is easy, Blade Runner 2049 is difficult.

Problem is real space is boring af. Literally 100% empty space by volume, to the nearest like trillionth of a percent. Are we moving? I dunno. We should be I guess. Oh look a planet. Hey guess what's on it: rocks.

Dunno if you caught this but High Life sounds like the kind of thing you're looking for. One of my favorites from last year.
