Believe it or not, there are no federal laws governing private ownership of flamethrowers or flamethrower-like devices (theyre considered extended-reach torches). It all comes down to individual state laws, and for the most part, everybody is surprisingly pretty chill with you bringing the heat. Only two states in the country restrict the devices: California and Maryland. Theyre completely banned in Maryland, and can only be obtained in California with a permit issued by the State Fire Marshal (Lets see your papers, Musk). Failure to get a license in California is a misdemeanor that could lead to a year of jail time, or a fine of $10,000. That means youre technically free and clear to buy and own flamethrowers in the other 48 states.

If you bring an active flamethrower out in public, you're going to be arrested. They don't need a specific law against them.

you have to be rather close to a person to burn them with a flamethrower. a handgun is much more practical and efficient

maybe, but as I said they are unwieldly and require a close proximity to the target. generally only good for killing a single person at best, really.

I would argue that they are effective at the same range that most pistol engagements take place in. They can reach well over 50 feet and hose down targets. And if you were facing a crowd of, lets just say zombies, the flamethrower would be a much superior choice. You could engulf an entire mob in a few seconds.

Second one is really just a can of hairspray and a lighter but still.

I'd imagine things like this aren't used because they cause too much attention and aren't as convenient to use. You set off a fire everyone knows exactly where it is happening from a good distance. Gunshots echo and can be concealed easily. It's just not a viable choice for criminals.

Wouldn't it be worse for zombies? I mean they wont feel the pain and continue shambling towards you... On fire.

Real life isnt a video game or movie. Organic life, even in the case of the hypothetical undead, covered in an accelerant and set on fire would not last long.

I mean, its still just a human body.

Long enough to get close to you. People on fire don't instantly turn to dust and can run around for quite a bit and if a creature doesn't feel much pain, and dont care about survival, whats stopping them from running at you?

Yeah but would the flames annihilate the zombies brains quick enough to stop them from getting to you?

The heat from the flame would probably fry their leg muscle before they could get to you if you were at least 30 feet away

Yeah. In most zombie media, once you take out the legs, it is a crawler at best. There are some exceptions, but mostly thats how it goes.

Well in the real world, yes. Humans need muscles to move, and at the end of the day, zombies are just humans who are infected by whatever disease causes it.

Heres something else to keep in mind. Movies and video games lie to you for the sake of setting up dramatic moments. Real organic matter doesnt hold up very well against fire. That is especially the case when an accelerant is aggressively doused all over it.

Iirc the gel-fuel flamethrowers are classified as destructive devices. The war-crime ones.

And those are a general no-no in most places to own without special licensing.
