You can beat red/blue in a few days and gold/silver in a few hours, if you really went for it.

Shouldn't you be more focused on Ruby, Pearl or Sword?

I want to say when I was younger I went through Red or maybe Yellow within a day as well, but that was dedicating the day to it.

Using the speed up option on an emulator (I have legit copies that just don't work) during the battles and traveling makes them go by even quicker.

A few hours is more like it. Even with just emulating the speedrun strats that don't require skill you should be able to beat it in 3 to 4 hours

Im not sure. Ive been halfassing speedruns because I want to train or catch other pokemon but I always lose interest around Rock Tunnel, because I think thats about the 3 hour mark.

I will say solo squirtle (& evolutions) is the easiest way to play though, you get so overleveled with a decent moveset.

But I keep grabbing Dugtrio for Surge & Koga. And trying Farfetch'd on Erica instead of using TMs like Ice Beam and Dig.

Solo Squirtle? The fastest way through the game is Horn Drill Nido using X Accuracy

Are you counting the G/S/C stuff where you go to the other continent?

Fastest is Nidoking? Yes, by a few seconds; thanks to RNG manip'ing DVs/IVs. Squirtle was tied for the world record before manips were found.

Easiest? Not quite. Squirtle with Ice Beam & Dig is stupid easy. I've done it before but now I keep trying to hoard my TMs for Stadium and... I lose interest, I have attention span problems. (depression, shrug)

They are only long if you are attempting to collect them all, and grinding to naturally evolve them.

Playing them like a kid would puts both around 20-30 hours. They werent designed to be played by bored adults using speedrunning strats.

You also might forget how as a kid you would just wander around, talk to npcs in towns, and engage in pointless sidequests. Which those games are chock full of.

Nidoking just plows through the early game for free though thanks to horn attack and thrash. Then in the mid to late game you just one shot everything. You can take a couple extra hours to fight some extra trainer battles so money isn't as tight and to make fights that are difficult in the speedrun version basically free. I don't see how being able to one shot everything doesn't make it easier. I understand your point about them being comparable in speed, but for a normal playthough using speedrunning strats Nido seems way easier and just a bit faster.

TLDR: Ice Beam & Dig also oneshot with much more PP. Everything does when you hit weaknesses; its pokemon.

I guess I haven't legitimately tried Nidoking, but the idea of spamming X Accuracies really does not appeal to me when Ice Beam and Dig can also oneshot or at least twoshot almost everything too. And they have more PP, honestly running back to the pokecenter to heal PP is a major time drain. Again, I could use ethers like the speedruns but.. muh' hoarding.

Speaking of, speedrunners keep track of PP like a gambler counts cards. They've memorized whether they can KO any given enemy with Thrash or if they need to save a Horn Drill for the Gymleader so they don't have to run back to the pokemon center.

Squirtle also plows through not only the early game, easier than Nidoking; but the whole game. I don't need to explain Brock but for Misty all you need is Bite. Use Dig on Surge and if you get worried in Rock Tunnel. Ice Beam on Erica, Dig on Team Rocket, ghosts and Koga. Use anything you want on Blaine, Ice Beam on Giovanni. I skipped Sabrina cause she's the hardest but you can overlevel enough to take her out with Dig; it has the same attack power as Earthquake in Gen One. Lorelei you kinda have to tank but at least you resist, Bruno is half given to you, Dig on Agatha, Ice Beam on Lance. The Rival is a mix of Ice Beam and Dig.

I'm sure Nidoking is effective, I agree even (How could I argue with the speedruns?) Im just saying; you don't realize Squi-ce Beam & Dig are just as effective.

I can definitely understand how a Nidoking run would be more annoying due to the need for stocking up on ethers and x accuracies, especially since you can't buy ethers IIRC. Still I feel like there's enough lying around, you have to visit the Center sometimes anyway. And you really only need the Horn Drill strat for the hard battles like Rival and Gym Leaders and such, especially since you'll be doing more battles than a speed run would.

I find it hard to believe that Wartortle competes with Nidoking in the early game, though. You get Nidoking in Mt. Moon and it has a 505 base stat total compared to Wartortle's 405. Beyond that, Nidoking has around 40 more attack and 30 more speed which matters a lot. I don't really feel like looking up special differences since it's different in gen 1 but I assume they're comparable. Thrash also has way more power than anything Wartortle has. Sure Bite is fine, but it's not like it's super effective against Misty in gen 1. If it was I could see your point, as is though I just don't see any advantage for Wartortle over Nidoking

Edit: Also you keep mentioning that the Squirtle line has Beam Dig but isn't Bolt Beam just better, which Nidoking has access to?

I think the point your missing is that; Nidoking might be better but... Squirtle is good enough. In otherwords, for example; if the enemy has 100 HP, whats the difference between 120 damage & 150 damage?

Im not saying Squirtle is better, Im saying its lazier.
